so we think that my horse is forming a curb (or will be one eventually) but it is just above to the side of the hock. what causes a curb and is is bad? will it affect him when he events?

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing but my horse did his curb ligament sept 2006.The curb ligament was below the hock?

How do you know it's a 'curb'? I believe a curb is a strain of the calcaneal cuboid ligament, caused by work which strains the hocks (but don't quote me). There's also something called a 'false curb' which I believe is due to the horse's conformation rather than a bump from a strain.
Another possibility may be thoroughpin...but that's in a different location on the hock.
What does your vet say?

it could be a thoroghpin, although is that not the one where you can push it in? it is strange though...

vet dosent know what it is!

A thoroughpin is on the side of the hock - and you can push the swelling from the inside to the outside of the joint (great fun).
If your vet doesn't know what it is, perhaps he could refer your horse to a vet hospital for a second opinion and/or scans?
Or you could have your horse stuffed?

Do you have a swelling on the hock area.Is it something like bog spavin.

A bog spavin is usually in the front of the hock though, whereas a curb is on the back, just below the point of the hock...well...a few inches.

Merlin had two bumps on his leg, below the hock and on the rear facing of the leg...... I think they were curbs, but he wasnt lame and eventually they shrank to nothing and went.

Dont think curbs occur above the hock joint though???

will try and get a picture to try and show you lot.
i cant push it from side to side (have tried though

we took horse to 2nd opinion to specialist horse vet and he didnt scan it as didnt feel need to, and thought that he would be fine. (didnt tell us what it was though - dont think anyone does!)

dont think having him stuffed is an option though, as where on earth would i put him?

curb

This is a firm swelling abut 4" below the point of the hock at the back of the leg. This is a strain of the ligament connecting the hind cannon to the hock. Does not cause permanent lameness.
There was a picture with a bump just below the hock. When my horse spained his it was lower down the ligament and caused lameness.I think his was more severe but healed well and hasnt stopped him doing anything. It was treated like any ligament strain plenty of rest then restricted turnout 12 weeks off work then rehabilitation.
