Hi All

I was just wondering how you finance your addicition(s)?

I have 1.5 horses (Prince AKA Donkey, 15.1hh Welsh Section D and Sparky AKA Mini Donkey, minature shetland) I have had my Horse now for many years and I recently moved him to my new home and went out and bought a companion for him.

I am now looking at getting another one but to keep at the local yard with all the facilities as I don't have much more room at home and a school, cross country course etc would be nice. I am also looking for a HB 510 trailer. I also have to upgrade my car next april to comply with the company's car policy

If I went out and bought these today I would use up my savings (for the new car and paying off my student loan) and probably enter my overdraft considerably or have to look at getting a loan for the capital.

The weekly/monthly costs are generally balanced each month although the credit card is used for online purchases but paid off when the statment comes, I'm just sat on the very impatient bus.

So do you buy now and pay later or sit dream and save knowing you have the interest to spend?

Robert

i save and buy
i then had the money to buy my brilliant all round amazing mare

also save for something you may want to save for then u dont have to weight when u find the thing u need to save for. lol best sentence ever

I went to uni............applied for maximum student loan - then bought my horse :D :o :D

I want another now, however im doing a masters next year so have to behave :D

If you mean how do you afford the keep and running costs of the addictive beasts, I have a second job. The full-time office dredge job pays the mortgage and the bills, and then I work as a personal trainer in the evenings and weekends to pay for the horses. It works for me.

If you mean how do you afford to buy a horse, I'd save up first (at least in theory).
In practice I can't save anything because all my 'spare' money goes on looking after my overgrown pet semi-retired ex-race-donkey, and the grubby grey (who is on loan to me).

And because I simply am just really very rubbish at saving, much to poor OH's despair.

Ah the good old days. How I miss that lovely student loan! Although I needed mine to finance the lifestyle... and the vodka...

well i stayed home but get nearly all the same student loan and horse lives at home. and we all prelash so no expensive drinks on a night out and i can have a night out in our area for 15 pounds as its very cheap xx

so money on horse and still act like a student:):)

I have no idea how I manage, the horse gets better things than me.

My biggest thing though is if you save and save for something you generally appreciate it a lot more when you get it which means I try and make it last as long as possible so I dont pay out again for it.

I cut costs where I can if I am after something in particular, buying in bulk always saves a few quid here and there.

MORE IMPORTANTLY (I know it is against our nature) haggle the price down as well. I once ordered 36 bales of shavings few years back and I just kept calling one supplier then going back to another saying they can do it cheaper and then calling them back again and again after 7/8 calls and for the added throw in of a bottle for the delivery driver I got them so cheap other horse owners thought I had half inched them at the price I got them for.

Best of luck with your purchases..

My OH helps a lot but I do lots of little things like paid online surveys, ads on my blog - ebaying - quidco (only for when I have something to renew/buy) and all the pennies go in a pot for the extra's like comp entries, lessons etc. :) I used to save and bought one of my horses and now my 'savings' goes on the livery for the horse I loan.

I work full time, don't have kids, no holidays, don't go out and have two lovely horses instead. I buy a lot of stuff for them second hand, from ebay, preloved or tack auctions. I buy all my clothes from charity shops- apart from riding gear (although I did find some jods and leather riding boots in a charity shop!).
I pay for everything on my tesco credit card each month and pay it off in full to get the clubcard points. I bought a trailer recently on a M&S credit card with 15months 0% so going to pay it off over the 15months.

I like to have something in the bank for emergencies, so would never use up all my savings and max my credit card. I don't like loans either so I'm a save and buy person. If I wanted another horse I would work out how much extra it would cost to keep, then save that amount for the next year, then I know I can afford to keep it, and I have the cash to buy it.

OMG - I wish I could be like that, so much more sensible than me. I'm far too impatient

I work to pay for my lot (10) . I also have two 17 year ols who will be going to university at some point in the next year or two.
Quite frankly if you are using your max student loan to fund your horses you must have well off parents who are funding your student life. Sorry but that dosnt sit well on me.

Have to agree, my stepdaughter can barely afford to live on hers. But back to the original question. I work as a finance assistant to fund my horses and everything that goes with them including my car. Husband who earns far more than me, covers the mortgage etc.

I try to save. I hate being overdrawn even by a tenner. I have never had a credit card, nor anything on HP. Everything I own I own outright. Might not be much, but its mine and was earned and worked for.

But I have to admit I do have a very generous father who helps me out with my old car, with servicing and repairs, and always gives me money if he knows I'm struggling. And gets me free shavings for Bails bed.

And of course a fantastic Mum who is not charging me any housekeeping atm as she knows I'm struggling to pay for the horse as I only earn part time hours. Feel a little guilty but have a clean conscience as I don't wast money on rubbish, never go out, never eat out, never buy new clothes, make up or have stupid £50 hair cuts, etc. I'm hard working, and do try very hard to get a job even though I've been temping for 22 years, I've only been out of work four or five times in all those years for a few days up to six weeks max.

My only 'extravagance' is competitions, one comp per week, normally two or three classes which I've not been able to do since mid June as horse is injured. And smoking for which I do intend to either cut down or give up totally. Gggrrrrrrr.

I amazed that students can afford to keep horses even with just a student loan unless they are living at home and their parents are not charging them rent or for any bills or food.

As a child and teenager my parents had paid for ponies. As a grown up I had to wait till I was 35 before I was earning enough to buy and keep a pony. i am lucky enough to have a well paid job so I can be independent and pay for my pony and look after myself too, which is a good job as I don't have any OH to help pay any bills.

Im a full time student but I work 26 hours at the weekend and my OH is very generous - a petted lip and puppy dog eyes still work 7 years down the line :D

I don't take credit for my horse needs/wants - currently saving for a trailer and 4x4 - will be a few more months before I can buy them.

oh my student finance now helps fund shoes for horse and her insurance

haha my grant pays for the rest :D my job pays for her livery/my petrol - everything else id paid for by my grant lol :D

god help me when i graduate next year!!!! :D

ets - i dont get an financial help from my parents - i wanted the horse so i bought her.... i dont expect any help for her, my car, myself etc....

Buying a horse with a student loan? My daughter barely got enough to pay for her accommodation ;-(

Same... I'm in cheap accommodation, in a tiny room in a rough part of the city and I work full time in the holidays and that's how I can afford to be here... Without the horse! It sits a bit wrong with me, plus it's debt!

i don't! my horse eats hand to mouth and i don't eat at all!!! i spend all my spare time trying to write a best selling novel so i may one day own that country cottage with stables out the back ....sigh.....never gunna happen but we all dream!
