Curious - How do you finance your addiction(s)?

i don't! my horse eats hand to mouth and i don't eat at all!!! i spend all my spare time trying to write a best selling novel so i may one day own that country cottage with stables out the back ....sigh.....never gunna happen but we all dream!

Ooooh what are you writing? Is it a thriller? Keep going girl! You can do it... may your dream come true.

Yeah!!! It's like the 3rd biggest pharmaceutical company in the world... but I haven't hit target so no new Dubarrys for me this winter :(

I think we should swap the little black books, I am sure between us we can come up with the man for the job. Having said that, only the THIRD biggest pharmaceutical company in the entire world, not quite god enough I am affraid.

Same... I'm in cheap accommodation, in a tiny room in a rough part of the city and I work full time in the holidays and that's how I can afford to be here... Without the horse! It sits a bit wrong with me, plus it's debt!

with all due respect - thats your choice to move in the city where its more expensive! :)

I chose to live at home, save some money up and go to a rural campus :)

Only third... cheh!!! I'm trying me best!!! Mind you sitting on my arze on HHO all day does no good....

Best get to bed so I'm fresh tomorrow out flogging drugs to the cash-strapped NHS... oh the joys.

OH pays rent and gas. I pay for other bills, debt accumulated during student (and London!) years... and HORSE, which altogether equates to the amount OH pays in rent.

We each have to pay for a car each plus fuel and food.

Currently, OH earns just a little more in his job since I took a paycut to get out of London and spend more time with my horse. BUT I freelance, which elevates my annual income above OH's, and essentially pays for horse and loads of other things.

One day, I'm gonna win the lottery or write the next big blockbuster, and then, I'll have loads of horses. :-)

I dont work but i'm a full time mum and have two ponies on diy which overall keeps me busy. My partner pays half the rent and bills whilst I pay everything else. I live in my stables clothes and no longer drink so save around £120 a week!

With all due respect, find me a nice rural campus where my course is run to a high standard and I'm so there! I'm in Soton atm, studying engineering... UEA is closest to me in terms of 'home' and it's rubbish in comparison to where I should be. Playing off my education in favour of horses would be silly. I'm just asking why are you spending money you don't technically have on something that really isn't a necessity!

Durham - good uni, good engineering department, and you're in the Pennines in no time. Also, considerably cheap compared to other big cities. Not that I could afford a horse when I was there!!! I don't know how the student loan thing works...

I rob a few banks each year, have a part time job as a get away driver and mug old ladies in my spare time!

I sometimes wonder how I manage but I am on unemployment benefit at the mo but have a lodger that pays rent towards the mortgage.

i just wont to clear up that i saved from the age of 4 any money anyone ever gave me and i have nice christmas presants from my grandma for a few year. so sue me im sorry for not being a poor child.
but the fact in that i saved that money and that mean that i had enough money to get myself through uni and spend money on a horse. just because i saved does not mean that i shouldnt have the same right to spend my student loan and grant like everyone else on a degree programme.

so it may not sit well with u but its how i sorted it out and i have saved the nhs alot in medical bills for my depression since i brough my horse and i would not be able to function without her.

i came home from uni and live at home so my only cost now is my horse and car and this was only a choice as it was that or be sectioned and im not being dramatic so yes im glad it doesnt sit well with others they can jog on..

how do you mange to pay for everything else if you dont work?

Ive never bought a horse with my student loan but I have bought a v.v.v nice saddle :D

I live with my OH who pays for most things so generally I'm only needing to pay for the horse/car although I will give him some money or do a weeks shop when I can to help. I have 6 months worth of placements during my course so working can be hard to juggle dependant on where I am placed and what hours I'm doing.

I have deferred now so am looking for work which is proving impossible in this area. I have money left over so that's keeping me going until I find something.

I save and budget throughout the year. I buy hay etc in summer same with winter rugs as everything is cheaper. I'm also good at fixing cars so sometimes buy stuff to fix up and sell on for a small profit. I'm not work shy by any means, I have gastric ulcers and severe ulcerative colitis but unfortunately no one wants to employ someone who may not make it to work every week.

I work full time and I save up for anything I want. If I cant afford it then I dont get it. Especially when you have a mortagage to pay aswell.

Never had credit cards, or been funded by parents etc. Everything I have I own out right and I wouldnt change that. I think you appretiate things more when you've worked for it (as Ive had no choice!).

I have a full time job as well as waitressing at functions at the weekend. I'm lucky to have horse at home and friends and I are very good at lending and borrowing items that we need off each other instead of buying brand new. We've all accumulated a lot of stuff over the years. Otherwise - Ebay!!

I saved up for my trailer and 4x4 so already have them. Horse is only ridden 6/9 months of the year so only have to pay for shoes then. Hay we get very cheap as OH helps bale it and move it. Same goes for straw.

My biggest outgoing is horse insurance and my hunt subscription which I save up for all year and pay in one hit.

I’ve been quite lucky in that I did years of modeling and promo work as well as a full time job – if I wasn’t doing either of those, I worked in my friends bar and saved saved saved!!! I never had a spare minute what with racing from one job to the next, quick rides here and there, having my own tea in the field whilst she was having hers!

BUT it did buy me my horse, an Audi TT, the deposit for my house and the money to fund the entire refurb of the house (it was bought as a project) but as Im now the big 30 I cant be bothered with all that so just work overtime at work (weekends).

3 jobs plus pony club coaching so 4 jobs in all :D
I work 7 days per week, don't have much time for my boyfriend (but he has his own time consuming hobbies so thats not so bad) but I can afford nice things for myself occasionally and my 4 ponies are proper pampered :D

I have a part time job for 2 hours a day, and pick up extra hours doing office of horse work when I can.
Have a lovely OH who covers everything else.
We also have 2 kids I look after.

Just noticed this thread, sorry to resurrect.

I don't have financial costs for G, I'm very lucky and he is on loan but kept at owners home, all bills covered by them in return for novice owner riding once or twice a month and me making sure yard is kept spotless at all times.

The biggest price I pay is in earache from owners who are very 'new money' (credit to them, they've worked hard to get where they are in life but it doesn't make me any lower down the hierarchy because I don't have a mansion of a house etc which sometimes is forgotten, grr) and very novice when it comes to any aspect of horse care. All they're bothered about is how clean the yard looks and if they have to lift a finger on the yard whilst they're home they get cross, so I have to put a LOT of work in to keep them sweet and therefore keep my big G.

Some of my friends think I'm mad to put up with their demands but I couldn't give him up now, and wouldn't be able to afford to have something even on DIY livery financially.

Work.

I have a boring 9-5 office job (Customer Service - yuk!) that funds everything - mortgage, bills, dogs, horses. My horses are kept as cheaply as possible, I rent land from a local farm (also a friend, so i get it pretty cheap) and hay is provided by another local farmer who i've known forever, so i get "mates rates" which is a LOT less than most people seem to be paying which im very grateful for. I dont go overboard with buying stuff for them, they have what they need (usually from ebay or tack sales) but im not into all the sparkly, matchy designer stuff :D Money is always tight, but never enough that anyone goes without. I did learn VERY abruptly how to shop on a very tight budget when i was made redundant and out of work for 8 months though - i've carried on shopping like that, its amazing how much more i used to spend than i needed to.

When I was a student I was pretty well off, I lived at home (couldnt afford accom. at uni PLUS livery for the horse) on very small amount of rent and worked 3 nights a week in a bar which earned me almost as much as my fulltime job does (yay for tips!!lol) and during the hols I would do as much temping as possible as well as the bar work to have money saved up. I took out a full student loan, just incase, but barely touched it as i managed to buy all my books and pay for all my rent/food/horse stuff from my earnings. In the end, my student loan went as part of the deposit for my house :D I havent had to pay anything back as im still earning below the minimum level.

I'm a fukk time uni student ... I paid for the initial things for my horse with my student loan. BUT before anyone jumps on me, I work 39 hours + a week, which gives horse all he needs and lets me have the dog and occassional treats.
