Just seen this article in the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/dec/15/cheques-bounced-out-history
About banks finally completely phasing out cheques. Now I don't use cheques frequently but do use them to pay certain bills.
My dad however is a farrier and I'd say roughly 80% of his clients pay by cheque, the remainder cash and I think 1 by BACS. Obviously if this goes through then it will mean a change for him and his clients - and I've only just got mum round to the idea of internet banking as it is

There are positive and negatives to the whole thing but I don't think there's a chance of him carrying around a card swiper thingy so it would mean paying by BACS or cash. Now in the past we've had problems with unpaid bills / bouncing cheques etc but this just started me wondering - will this make a difference to the clients or will it actually simplify it?

Big hot choccy with cream and marshmallows if you got this far

Cheque. I use cheques for farrier, chiropracter, dentist and to pay my YO for services and forage. Its easier to carry my cheque book in my bag than to remember to go by a cash machine! I dont usually carry much cash on me as I buy most other things by debit card.

99% of the time, cash. When I got my first pony at the riding school, about 20 years ago, the farrier there used to go ape if anyone tried paying with a cheque. It quickly got ingrained in us that it was cash or a bollocking - I've been paying cash ever since, even though subsequent farriers have assured me I won't get in trouble if I pay by cheque!

We do invoice the riding schools / large yards but most people with just one horse just leave the cheque or cash there - especially if they're not around when Dad's going. These clients still seem to pay by cheque though except for the 1 BACS client currently.

Just saw the link - we currently can't even get him to use a mobile (he calls all messages from the home phone back the same night if possible) and I still have to switch the pc on for him... (yes he is a luddite)

Cheque, but I only have one horse so I could quite easily pay cash.

However, not good for those with several horses....hopefully, an alternative might be found (whatever that might be??).

I pay by cheque, mostly because my farrier will shoe atleast 3 if not 4 of my horses at a time. I personally wouldn't want to carry around over £200 cash!

cash - hate using cheques - people don't always bank them predictably - my haylage guy took 4 months to cash one of mine, and I hate not knowing when the money is going out

Cheque - I never carry much cash on me and in the rest of my life do everything by bank transfer and credit card.
In fact I wanted to switch to a green account but couldn't as I needed to keep a chequebook for the shoeing and livery.

I pay by cheque, it's dead handy as i never remember to go to bank machine. I normally post on the cheque. My farrier is brilliant. The farrier i had as a tenager always wanted cash, and the best way to get him back when you needed him was to owe him from the last time, he'd arrive promptly.

99% of the time, cash. I know it's coming so no problem nipping to get cash, which I carry very little of. Husband always pays by cheque.

I mostly pay by cash for farrier, bedding delivery, livery, etc.

I have to say though that I will miss cheques, we never had the same level of fraud problems with cheques and cheque cards, if your cheque book was stolen you soon knew it and could stop cheques no hope if that with stolen details from a debit card.
