I have three JRT's and my two girls who i've had since pups have normal nails that grow long and are very easy to trim myself BUT my new boy who i've rescued aged 5 has nails that grow on a very tight bed so that they cannot be cut by clippers as they will not fit between the pad and the nail.

They are not very long but theyt look like they might grow into the pad.

Does anyone know of nail files that would work to shape his nails away from his pads? so they could be trimmed has anyone got a dog who has same problem?

EEK Nails on dogs... My previous dog who is a Basset hound used to do blood curling screams every time i go near him with clippers in the end his nails curls into his paDs and we eventually took him to vet (so he can be sedated). So my best bet is to have it clipped by vet just in case and he/she will show you how to do it? Did rescue centre show you how to do it?
I have 5 month old JRT and is good with clipping (thank god)

try playing with him chucking and fetching a ball on a concrete road or path .....car parks are good.....they make wonderfull emery boards....i used to do it with my doberman who would rather bite my head off than let me near him with nail clippers

U can actually get different types of nail clippers, I groom dogs and clip alot of curled under nails.... use a straight pair not the guilatine type!! i will try and find a site that sells the type i use and get back to u

some folk use a Dremel hand held grinder on their dogs nails as they find this easier - the trouble could be that his front legs are not straight and this means that his nails will not be making contact with the ground properly and will not naturally get worn down - run your hands down both legs - they should be perfectly parallel if not then you will have to trim them yourself as no amount of road walking/excercise will do the trick -.

Ha ha well done millar i have a bow-legged doggy!! that makes soch a difference, i have filed the using a nail file (took ages) but they are so much better and he is much happier thank you everyone!

Hmm dremel multi could be a good buy!
