So I am on the lookout for a horse yet again as its not really working out with my loan wvtb horse as he is a beautiful but young and silly thoroughbred and just not what I wanted (it wasn't really my idea I got sucked in!) though it pains me to see him go :-(

I fell off him and broke my elbow, had to have surgery to repair my tricep tendon and its going to take 3 months to get better! I am not scared to get on him again but I have to be realistic that I am mostly going to be hacking alone and we have a fair bit of roadwork, plus it's hard not to have your confidence knocked a bit! It might be OK if I was on a yard with school and people around all the time, but I have a rented field although I do have neighbours.

Realistically he will probably end up staying in my field until sold as owner doesn't have space and I have had him on loan longer than she has owned him previously anyway!

So on a lighter note, I want an Haflinger, Connie, or welsh D of the over 15.1ish variety! Have seen a lovely haflinger mare that is 10 years old and in budget, I so badly want to go see but I still have the bad arm so cannot ride :-(

Nice sensible horse now, buy further young silly horses in addition to this when I have enough money for two (student at the mo) that is the plan :-)

Emma.is - Yes I am not really fussy about breed, but those three appeal and any crosses or variations (a Connie x ID would be amazing) and any other similar types/breeds :-) I also have a few ID and ISH and some cobs in mind but I would want something a bit more sporty. I love highlands, I know you can get them fairly tall these days but I would have thought 15hh plus might be a bit too much to ask? What did you end up with in the end?

I am a little bit set on a haflinger right now though, I seem to remember wanting one when I was little and I like their versatility.

Was just looking at 'arabohaflingers' http://www.google.co.uk/search?tbm=...&tab=wi&q=arabohaflinger&sa=N&biw=360&bih=640

Rather lovely!

Do be careful if you go for a Haflinger. My friend had one that was a right git. It later transpired that the pony was not a git at all, it's just that he had been mis-sold. He was advertised a novice ride, but he had actually spent his early life as a driving pony on the continent. He was shipped over and hastily backed for sale.

ETA. This buckskin Welsh X arab is pretty cute. :D :)

That is true Faracat I know they can be bolshy on the ground although I'm sadly used to that from various horses now! I am aware a lot of people don't like the very big welsh Ds for example as they have the attitude and the size to match!

I am so over youngster issues right now, after further attempts at training him to pick his back feet up without kicking out at my already injured self today I longed for just a little bit less complicated!

Oh I do love a dun/buckskin, lovely looker that one :-)

If you want a Haffie,go for a GB registered one. Firstly as they wont have been mainly driving broken and shipped over in a big load without the individual handling and one to one consistent stuff all coblets benefit from as youngsters ideally (!), they will have been bred here and you may even get to meet the parents and secondly cos on the continent they will register Haffies as Haffies even tho they have some other breeds mixed in - so its less easy to be sure what you are getting. Wheras the GB soc follows the Austrian mother studbook and they are all pure bred 100% in the main studbook.

Not sure i would go for more Arab than Haffies already have (they are originally cross between an Arab stally and the Tyrolean native mountain pony) - my Haffie has quite an Araby dish face and quite arab-y ways.

It isnt a guarantee but its the best way to maximise the chances of one that has had the early individual attention. Plus if you ever wanted to take them to the breed show they need to be GB registered.

I wouldnt be afraid of getting a young one either, a Haffie is much better mannered if you can get hold of them early and give them good consistent training. My just 4 yo Haffie (that I and YO backed) was more confidence giving as a hack than my 17 hander has ever been!)

Have a look at the lovelies for sale here at the breed soc site.

PS if you go for it we want piccies. You might even get a twin for mine...:-)) (rugged only as it was -20 degrees!)

Ooh thanks great advice! Yes I wouldn't be too worried about a youngun as long as they are tall! Oh yours is so pretty!

I feel bad today, had to have vet out for the silly TB who got a gash right near but hopefully not too near his stifle today messing about with the youngster on other side of fence! It really needed stitching but even sedated it wasn't happening :-( so its left open and sprayed, I have Bute and antibiotics. Poor thin skinned sensitive boy! I like to think a haffie would not be galloping round like a mentalist in the first place but I guess that may be optimistic haha. I hope he is ok :-(

I had a silly young tb on lwvtb recently too which didn't work out. He went back and I bought a 5year old gypsy cob (younger than the tb!) - best thing I ever did! He is so sane and sensible, doesn't hoon around the field and hurt himself, but he is still forward going and fun (not at all ploddy!) good luck in your search!

I think it is the way to go cobsgalore! I do enjoy the youngster things really and all the flatwork schooling (although would like something more confident than me over jumps to try and get me more confident!) but I think 'typical' TBs at least are just not for me!

I told the owner today that I can't keep him, not really good timing but oh well! I'm sure she understands what with my fairly major injury and he came to me as she would never ride him again after a fall. I am not really sure who should pay the bill as we don't have a contract (I know I know) what do you think would be normal in this situation? It won't cost THAT much for today I might suggest 50/50. Owner has him insured which is good as may need x rays but hopefully not!

Haha Faracat I noticed that too. The one I want to look at is the only one on horsemart not advertised as palomino ;-)

My welsh PB (Sec D x Ish x Gypsy Cob) is a lovely overgrown pony! They definitely the way to go! Genie (welsh D) has the clever pony brain, and Titchy (the PB) is the same. Very sensible but clever and she will make a cracking horse for someone.

Good luck, I hope your arm is better soon and you find what you want!
