Has anyone ever had a Cushing pony fainting when head high, this pony has now done it twice first time clipping her ears and just now when I was trying to put drops in her eye,
Faints goes down then a quick shake and then ok , The Vet said she saw it once when a pony she was doing the teeth did this.
I am interested if anyone else has had this at any time.A bit of a worry.

I had a horse who fainted twice when his head was held up high having his teeth done. We ended up doing him in the field as he bashed himself quite badly falling onto concrete. My vet said that some horses have a nerve trigger that basically KO's them - people have a similar trigger point somewhere in their necks. Although he was very calm it was safer for him to have his teeth done whilst sedated as it kept his head lower. There is also a pressure point on top of the poll - if you press this point firmly with the pads of your finger tips (not jabbing finger tips in) it encourages the horse to drop it's head although you might need assistance to get the eye drops in.

This happened twice to a horse on my yard, when he raised his head to play with the horse in the next stable. He didn't really faint though, he would fall down and have a sort of seizure with his legs and neck completely rigid.

He turned out to have a bone chip floating around somewhere in his neck, and if I remember rightly, had surgery to remove it. Sorry, really vague on the inns and outs of it, all I know is bone chip and neck and it hasn't happened since! He was recently diagnosed with cushings though, so perhaps there is a link there.

Pushing the head up and back is one of the standard neurological tests. Wiping the eyes can be a trigger for this sort of thing, and also seizures. It could be that your pony's tumour is causing it, it could be down to arthritis in the high neck bones. My dentist told me he had had horses (usually arabs) collapse occassionally when he was rasping. I think it is more common than many think.
