Not for me, I hasten to add.

A lady on my yard has the cob her daughters learned to ride on, who is about 22/23 & an occasional happy hacker. Some point before I moved to this yard, she moved to Scotland with the cob, but then moved back again. While she was there, she "acquired" a Shetland companion (wild, barely looked after) who was so wild, they couldn't herd her into a trailer when they moved the cob & had to go all the way back for her (midlands to northern Scotland) a week later!

Little lady must be 40 if she's a day. She WON'T be lead on a headcollar - I know, I tried!

She's moved from field to field by following the cob, & will only allow her owner to groom her until she's had enough - she'll try to scale walls 3 times her height to get away..

So, in short, vets are no option for her.

But we suspect she may be suffering from cushings, as she's held onto her winter coat longer than she should. She did this last year, but not to the same extent. She's still fluffy now, even though we've had weather in excess of 30 degrees. Owner managed to groom her for a bit the other day & said it came out easily enough with her hands, but it's not coming out on it's own.

She wants to treat her to make her more comfortable, but really it's going to have to be supplements/medicine that can go in her feed, as she won't stand for anything else & it will just cause her more stress.

So, any good HHO advice on supplements?
Or suggestions of something other than cushings?

Thanks in advance :)

Try Chaste Berry powder - there was an article in this quarter's BHS magazine, where an owner had proven the use of chaste berry brought her Cushings pony blood test levels from 208 down to just 26 in months. The vet has now declared the pony as 'normal', he remains on the powder. From memory you give around 15g a day. It's cheap at around £10 for a 1kg bag.

Chaste Berry is used as a hormone balancer fro rigs/geldings/mares also. I give it to my 23 yr old laminitic who I believe (untested) has cushings.

Brilliant, thank you so much! I will write this info down & give it to the lady this afternoon :) She'll be very grateful & hopefully so with the pony! xxx

Chaste Berry is also known as Agnus Castus. I found ebay to be the cheapest source for me to buy it. My pony is only 10hh so he gets but a 10ml scoop a day. I am sure dosage instructions came on the bag :) Good luck.

You say Vets are no option - is this because you can't hold on to her once caught?
How does she have her feet trimmed - particularly if cushings is suspected it can also come with laminitis.
some of the Shetlands near us have only just shed their coats. Our cushings pony has to be clipped - she doesn't shed at all.
As the only way to diagnose cushings is the blood test:
Can I suggest the pony is sedated with a food additive then the blood test taken.
If cushhings is found then a daily drug can be popped into some nuts/fibrebeet/chaff and the pony will be better off.
