Our almost 20 year old TB ex-pointer mare is, we believe, developing Cushings. We've Googled this condition and, have decided to try the natural route which appears to be chaste berry and what we need to know is the dosage for a 16.2hh TB mare. She is currently looking amazing and is as hot as ever but think she suffered a mild bout of laminitis in the autumn (vet didn't think so but farrier did) and her the coat on her legs was VERY curly (rest of her was clipped out). Any help would be much appreciated.

I've just started this for my shetland - it say on the pot what dosage to use but I think he's on half a scoop per day - prob about 2 tablespoons, and double for that for a horse. Sounds a bit vague I know, sorry. I went to a vet client evening last week about laminitis, veterans and cushings. The vet was adamant that there was no proven benefit to feeding Chaste berry but he couldn't deny that some people reported an improvement. I do however have my pony on meds too. So far he just seems the same as when on meds alone but I've only had the supplement for a couple of weeks. I have to say the biggest improvement by far for my chap was starting the Prascend - it may be worth considering it further or at least consulting your vet if your horse seems to get worse. Good luck with it.

You can buy Agnus Castus tincture from Cotswold Herbs for £9 a litre - quite good really.

We use it for our cushings pony - he is 11.2hh - we use 30 ml twice a day.

Cotswold Herbs are a pretty good resource.

we buy our chaste berries as whole in 1kg bags and put them through a coffee grinder cost around £6.00 a bag you can buy them over the internet from health food shops
we feed our cushings pony(14hh) 1 scoop twice a day (15ml scoop) and i can honestly say he shed his coat for the past 2 seasons he's been on them
we feed for 3 weeks with one week off
we also feed these to our mares through there seasons
link below of how i found out about them

I have just (on the advice of a equine herbalist friend) started my 27yo mare on this. I got it from Feedmark online and it seems to be helping with shedding her coat this year. They deliver free which is handy and next day delivery.
