My shetland got mild laminitis back in June, tested positive for cushings. Tested for Ems and that was negative, on week 4 of pracsend and week 7 of box rest. Xrays showed very mild rotation in both fronts, farrier on board with trimming. Vet said I can start short turnout, however I'm terrified as our grazing is far too good. He will be muzzled whilst I hand graze him, shall I hold off until he gets the next blood test done in a weeks time? I'm already planning on stripping a paddock bare and dotting hay around. At the moment I'm not in a position to send both of my babies on to a track livery, that is the future plan.

If you can hang on until the blood test, I would, or just muzzle him as you have suggested. The thing is, he’s at more risk of getting laminitis again because he’s had it once, but controlled cushings doesn’t make him any more susceptible than any other pony. I worry less about my two medicated ponies than I do about the undiagnosed shetland.

When mine - 16.2 hh - was coming off box rest after laminitis (fortunately caught very early so no rotation and only 10 days box rest) - I made him a tiny turnout area about the size of two stables on the barest patch of ground I had.

About five years later he was diagnosed with Cushings and is on 0.5 Prascend with no reocurrence but I am very careful with his management.
