Cushings pony - very sad afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post a few weeks ago when my shetland had had one of her laminitic bouts due to her cushings, I followed your advice and reduced sugar in her diet until it was absolute rock bottom and kept it at that. That helped her and she came right, cantering about even. Sadly last week she came down with laminitis again. The prescend doesn't seemed to have helped at all and bute does nothing. Her laminitic episodes have got much closer together and are now at the point where I have nothing left to try, especially as bute doesn't even help her through her episodes anymore. She's clearly uncomfortable and I cannot put her through it anymore.

Absolutely devastated as I've had her 22 years. The vet is coming this afternoon to put her to sleep and she will be buried in the field. The yard will be extremely odd without her.
 
Will be thinking of you this afternoon. She's a lucky little lady to have a loving owner like you who is doing the right thing, however hard it is. Take care of yourself. x
 
I am so sorry to hear that, what a very sad situation.
I hope you can take some comfort from the fact that you've given this pony a wonderful life, and have done everything you could have done, to help her.

I am so sorry to see your post - one of mine has Cushings, so I understand the worry you have been through. My thoughts are with you, and I hope you have lots of wonderful memories to treasure.

So sorry to hear this, I had my boy PTS 3 weeks ago, due to cushings, he had been with me for 21 years. It is a very difficult decision to make, but take comfort like others have said, that for 22 years he has had a wonderful life with a caring owner.

So sorry to hear that you will be going through this this afternoon. She was certainly lucky to have had 22 years with a caring owner who is letting her go before she suffers. Best for her, but hardest for you. I hope all goes well and you can rest easy in knowing that you've done the right thing. x
 
I'm so sorry but you are doing the right thing. There IS a fate worse than death and that is to continue struggling with pain and discomfort. Hang on to the fact that that is by far the best thing for her - my old mare pretty much asked for me to let her go, and that has changed how I feel about having them euthanized. I hope you won't feel too bad when it is all over, take care.

You are doing the very kindest thing. When their quality of life is reduced it's the kindest thing we can do for an old and dearest friend.

Oh Sweetie, I am so sorry :(. Poor wee girl - but at least she's not suffering now (not that that's any comfort to you). Please take care of yourself :(.

You are doing the right thing, think how lucky she was to heve had such a faithful and loving owner for so many years. God bless x
 
Thanks everyone. She went very quickly with me and my mum by her side, whilst I fed her mints. She had heaps of apples and carrots beforehand which she loved. I opened the gate so she could go and graze but she just wanted to stay in her stable, she looked so sore which I guess made the decision a bit easier. Still feel very guilty having done this to her, wondering if there was more I could have done / tried. Still cannot believe she's gone.

My other pony who came with her has spent his whole life with her, he's just wondering about sniffing everything looking a bit lost. Now I have to decide what to do next for him in the way of company which I can't really face thinking about but I can't leave him on his own for long. What makes it even more depressing is that he also has cushings, he got diagnosed about 5 years ago. So I guess this is likely to happen to him eventually too. Bloody cushings. What a horrid, horrid disease.

RIP little pony and big hugs to magic melon. You did the right thing for your wee girl.

I agree cushings is a horrid disease. I lost my mare to it in 2002 (aged 14) and now my current horse has it as well.

I'm sorry to read this and am sure that you did absolutely the right thing for your pony. She obviously had 22 wonderful years with a very caring owner.
However I wonder if you have tried magnetic boots with your other pony. I know someone who manages her lami/Cushings pony with them as well as being careful with his diet/turnout etc.
 
MM, there is NOTHING more you could have done. It is a nasty cruel disease. Some horses and ponies just go into this downwards spiral and eventually nothing helps. Sadly I know this from experience. It gets even the 'brightest flames'.
