Hi all.

First of, he is on prasend, 1 and 1/2 tablets a day and retest in a month.

He was very lathargic and just flat on the ground but very spooky and sharpe under saddle which wasnt like him so we had a full blood work up done in april along with a cushings test as he was turning 15 this year. The ACTH test was boarderline so we did the TRH stim test. Results supposed to be under 200 his was 1,100 odd 😱 one tablet and retested after 5 weeks which was last week and down to 750. So now added another half tablet and retest in a month.

I dont really do supplements as he is a tuff one to get to eat food in the summer and picky in winter. He eats in winter one feed a day of thunder brooks (yes i know but its one of the only chaffs he will eat and he has gone off the over one) and 10,000 IU of vit e and salt.

I wondered if anyone has had any success in any supportive supplements, like the cush care etc. Or herbal additions.

He is going to be started on Oily Herbs the main three recommended on here when they arrive. Hopefully he will eat them.

Someone has also recommened the L94 as a one off course from Trinity Consultants.

He is still a bit flat, wanting to come into his stable when normally he is living out as he hates being in during summer.

Weight wise he needs a bit off, coming back into work after time off for sarciod treatment and then nasty fly bite.

He has thrown a decent spling so onl walk working at the moment, once we can do more the weight will come off.

Sorry for the essay, been about 10 years since we had a cushings horse and I am nit sure if anything has changed.

I don’t think anything special is needed if you are giving Prascend. Oily herbs didn’t make any difference to my mare so I stopped feeding it when I ran out and not sure if I will start again.

The oily herbs are more for skin and digestive health, he has just gone through a long liverpool cream treatment for sarciods so thats why i thought to try them.

Thank you. I worry i am not giving him enough body support, he is a fussy eater anyway but as he gets older i just want to do what i can for him.

The oily herbs is a good shout, both of my PPID mares are on them as well as their Prascend (1.5 tablets a day for one, 1.0 tablets for the other).

It was the younger non PPID mare with hind gut issues who originally was recommended the oily herbs, I later bunged the other 2 on them as well. I have noticed that their skin and coats are better, and no one has had a foot abscess for a couple of years now, whereas before they did get them.

My 3 love the oily herbs plus any other dried herbs they get (dandelion, hawthorn, cleavers, rosehips etc). They are not black art magic, it's just giving the horse a good healthy varied diet.

Good luck.

My gelding is doing well on Progressive Earth pro veteran balancer, although he is only 17 the extra vitamins and minerals designed for older horses seem helpful. He is in full work and a bit of linseed oil gives him more energy. We are lucky as our fields have lovely rich hedgerows, he currently loves hawthorn, thistle flowers and cleavers.
He can be fussy with his feed and has taken me a while to find something he will eat, I introduced his balancer very slowly and mix it with the plain chaff he likes.
Some supplements are contra-indicted with Prascend, so check first.
I find the Equine PPID (Cushings ) Facebook group a good source of up to date info.

I don't give any particular supplements to my Cushings pony. He just gets Prascend for that, that costs enough without buying more things!

2 Dragons' point about checking first about supplements is a good one. There are things which can reduce the effectiveness of Prascend.

I gave formula4feet to my cushings mare as her feet started looking rough, splits and very dry (weather was very hot and dry) feet improved dramatically and I stopped feeding, feet went back to looking bad so I started it again and she had it for the rest of her life..that was the only supplement I used
