Cushings test result of 60 - start treatment

Well my big 20 year old has just come back with levels of 66' all the symptoms, got the prascend straight away! Day 3 , I can not wait for him to get back to normal!!!
Does anyone have any good info, web sites on cushings, as I realy want to make sure I am feeding him the best! He needs to put loads of weight on aswell x
Good luck!!

Pls read 'the laminitis site' linked to and mentioned several times on this thread and /or join the Facebook group also mentioned and linked to.
Tons of research based info...case studies etc.

Still stuck, can anyone provide links to some science based descriptions of prognosis and side effects of treatment.

I had another vet out today to do vacs (same practice) and he also said as horse is symptomless and only reading 60 he wouldn't start to give drugs as unnecessary !

Sweating, skin infections (rain scald) and itchiness could all be symptoms that alongside a higher than normal reading could mean a diagnosis of cushings (PPID).

I had the vet to mine last winter, he was having unexplained lami, and was lethargic and a bit down, just not himself. Diagnosed with Cushings, level about 70, on Prascend and he is back to his old self. Happy, bouncy, loving life. I did not like seeing him so low and I certainly did not enjoy riding him also lami is an absolute pain, restricted grazing, soaking hay etc, fingers crossed for a small outlay he is as good as new, he is 18 and when the saddler came the other day he said what is he 8/10?!!

Just a side note, their is a drug your vet can prescribe alongside Prascend which is an appetite stimulant and can help stop the lack of appetite when they first start on the medication. Mine only needed the extra drug for a couple of weeks and we had no side effects from Prascend whatsoever.

It is interesting to read that everyone has said medicate.

I had a little New Forest mare that was diagnosed at the age of 24. Her level was high at over 200. She had no signs at all. her coat was nice and shiny ,she ate well ,did not over drink or urinate. She had always been quiet and as she was only ever used as a companion her energy levels were never tested. She never had Laminitis or such.

My vet suggested treating her with herbs so I started her on the Hilton Herbs CushX Gold. Eight weeks after starting another blood test was done. The level had dropped to 70 and another four weeks later and a further blood test and we were down to 32. She continued on the CushX until she was 30 when I lost her after a fall that injured her back and leg and she was unable to get up.

At the level of 60 I would try the herbs first to see if it works.

What time of the year where these blood tests done?

I would try the Prascend, I'm no expert on the science but I do know that without this medication my mare would have been put down at 25, she was depressed and losing condition pre medication. She is only on 1 1/4 tablets 28 now and hacking out 4 times a week.

October. They were done as part of the free testing from Liphook.
If the first test was done in October and the others 8 & 12 weeks later the change could well be because the first was in the seasonal rise and then the levels dropping because of the time of year. It's too late n your case, of course, but if another horse has figures like this it would be important to check the following season during the seasonal rise to compare levels like for like.
