Cushings test

My old pony had a long running on off abscess that wouldn't resolve. Eventually found it was a small piece of metal buried in the frog when it popped to the surface. He recovered after that.

A friend recently had a horse with clean x rays but blocks to the foot. Had MRI and has moderate navicular remodelling and bursitis and coffin joint inflammation. So clean x rays does not mean he doesnt have navicular unfortunately.
I do understand why mri isnt an option ,it is quite a large expense .

Also my vet wont do joint injections and teeth on the same day, something to do with bacteria.

I've spent around 10k - 12k on vets bills since I've had him, some of which was under insurance so an MRI is sadly a bridge too far. He's not a ridden horse and whilst I've always been happy to pay for him under investigation as you agree, you have to draw the line somewhere.

Hoping he won't have to have his tooth out, my vet doesn't feel he will need to although my other one does. I wonder if just a mouth examination would also exclude the navicular being done.

Yes that article on reply 23 suggests what you've said.

It is worth noting, however, that some horses’ X-rays show changes to their navicular bones and yet have no symptoms or lameness, while others who do have navicular syndrome show no evidence of this on X-ray

You need lameness and xrays for navicular syndrome

And changes don't mean n s if no lameness

Well thats what I always thought

Be interested to know if no x ray

changes how its diagnosed as Ns

Where does erosion of navicular and bone spurs fit into all this

Just to say Birker you gave spent more money than most people on a retired horse which is absolutely admirable and nobody would judge you for drawing the line.

We know your saving for a new horse and still spending significant amounts of money on a field ornament who is on full livery.
Don't bankrupt your self is all I'm trying to say

Navicular syndrome is a bit of a catch all term. It’s often soft tissue/ligament damage in the area. Hence why you might block a lame horse sound on a nav block but see no changes on X-ray. MRI then usually indicated

Hence syndrome

But the end result is damage to the bone surely

Also circulation to the hoof, its contents, and the use at one time of isoxuprine

Thank you.

No i have a cut off point, I did it with Bailey and would do it again.

I've turned him back out overnight tonight, and greatly reduced his paddock size by two thirds as he's not been on it all week and the grass is mental. We had a slow walk when I took his headcollar off which dissolved into a fast canter and then a lovely elevated trot that would have been the envy of many a dressage competitor. We finished off with front legs either side of head, whilst back arched and all four feet off the ground. Then he walked off sound.

Will see what tomorrow morning brings. I'm there for 5.30am.
