Hi
My very elderly pony was started on pergolide 11 day ago, today when i was feeding her she sniffed her feed, eat some then walked off, which is totally out of character for her, also she looked a bit fed up but was aware of what was going on around her,
so is going off there food a side effect of Pergolide,i will be phoning my vet tomorrow, but it is slightly worrying me,thanks in advance

It's a pretty common side effect that some horses go off their feed when you first start feeding pergolide. Try adding mint or fenugreek to tempt her and after a couple of weeks she should be back to normal.

Yes the tablet was in the feed, sadly she hasn't many teeth left, today she has done a little bit better with her feed but hadnt finished it before i left and had wandered off to graze.

try hiding it in a tasty mush/paste/in an apple.

Anorexia is a common starting side effect of pergolide. Often what is done is the dose is reduced and then brought back up again. Id talk to your vet about it.
But try hiding it in tasty stuff first to see if she will fall for it!

I knew Motor would starve rather than eat feed with the Pergolide in it, and even stuffing it in an apple ensured that he will not eat an apple from my hand, even now 4 years later

Try using a 50ml Doser Syringe, as it works for me and is 'free' as he has High Fibre nuts for breakfast and tea

... you can use Apple Sauce, but that costs loads of money

Soak a few High Fibre Nuts overnight in a little water
In the morning dampen the tablet(s) for 10 minutes, to soften it enough to go through the doser syringe
Pour some really runny mix into the Syringe up to about the 1/4 mark
Add the dampened, softened tablet
Add more High Fibre mix to about 1/2 or so in the Syringe, thus 'sandwiching' the tablet
Cafefully push the plunger in the Syringe and expel the air (you have to be soooo careful here to ensure you do not lose the whole lot, but with practice, it is easy!)
Administer the 'mix' like a wormer, ensuring the Syringe is high up in the mouth, with their head up in the air

Motor curls his lips back waiting for it every morning and for a horse that used to knock me black and blue, trying to Worm him 18 years ago, then this must be good.

Good Luck and keep us updated?

Thank you for the advice tonight she ate all most a full bucket full and was more interested in it,managed to trick her with a polo crushed with the tablet

,my vet advised me to give her half a tablet for a couple of day to see if that works, fingers crossed,if it doesn't they will come out to recess,
