My 13 year old mini shettie as been diognosed as having cushings and he will be starting pergolide (sp), and i was looking up the condition on the net and hilton herbs cushx cropped up. My question is does anyone use this and is it any good and can i use it with the pergolide that the vet as prescibed. Any advice for people out there with a pony with cushings would be helpful, like what is the average life span once they are diognosed as the net does not really answer that question for me.

If you wanted to give him herbal products as well as pergolide the most commonly used is Vitex, which is chastetree berry.

There is no scientific evidence to prove it works...... there are many websites saying it does, but there is no researched evidence that says it does, there are a couple of research papers proving that they dont work as well as the medicines.

Not saying it doesnt work at all, but the medicine is the best way to help your pony.

Other helpful things to do are to alter diet to a more senior/laminitis prevention diet. And also thinks like clipping if the hirsutitsm gets really bad and uncomfortable for him.

I know some people swear by vitex or chastetree berry, but as I say I am yet to find evidence of it working.

He as always been on a lami type of diet just because of his breed and was a lovely weight when he had his first bout of lami, it was mild and totally sound within 3 days.
I was just thinking that a supplement made for cushings would help with the vets treatment, thanks for your advice.

sorry i hope i didnt sound snotty or horrible.
I know some people swear by vitex and other cushings herbal supplements etc.

The pergolide is the thing that will help reduce the risk of lami and other clinical signs.
However, the herbal supplements will not do any harm, however always check with your vet to ensure that they agree it will not interfere with the pergolide adn any other medications etc that he is on.

Its nice to know you are fighting for him, and not just giving up due to the disease

I hope he does well on the pergolide, it is a great drug!
