My retriever has just cut her ear, only a small cut but loads of blood. I have bathed it in salt water and there is nothing in it and it stopped bleeding. Has anyone any tips to stop it bleeding if it starts again ( a friend suggested cornflour)? or can I bandage it

Not sure if this was the right thing or not but when my terrier cut his ear, similar to you, tiny and not deep but bled like crazy, salt water to clean and it did stop but everything the little b**ger shook his head it started again so resorted to cutting a lump of elastoplast (sticking plaster) and putting sandwiched over the tip of his ear and left it for a 24 hours, long enough for it to start to heal. Was of course very careful when taking it off but it was the only thing that stayed on for more than 30 secs. Tried bandaging but dog was not impressed.

Spray plaster? Sorry this is my stock answer but I find it really helpful for cuts in weird places.

I must get some of this, where did you buy it?.

When Darcy cut her ear last year I couldnt believe the amount of blood, she kept shaking her head and spraying it up the walls, fridge, cooker etc. I put some pressure on it and stuck some plasters over it and it did the trick. Before I had a chance to clear up all the blood the tv repair man arrived and must have thought he had stumbled in on a murder scene.:D Surpringly enough he declined a cup of tea.:D

Boots, any chemist, Savlon is the best brand, I do use Boots own brand though, I keep the spray disinfectant and spray plaster in my kit bag for Mr Accident Prone and his Accident Prone Owner :p

Thanks guys, I think I have some spray plaster somewhere, I think I got it from Boots. It seems to have stopped bleeding for now. One site I googled suggested cutting the leg off a pair of tights and using it to put over the head with some absorbent padding underneath to stop the ears shaking, which seemed a good idea

A head bandage is best, the blood is usally made worse by head shaking and the only way you can prevent blood splatter from head shaking is (bandaging the head) a ladies sanitary towel is always a nice handy blood stopper:eek::p, simply place it on wound area and rest that ear on the head so you can see the ear canal as the ear lies over the skull, then bandage around the head/under chin a few times or indeed some tights:D just make sure its not to tight, in a few hours you can remove and it will have dried enough to stop the blood splatter:D
