Horse came in with this today, poss kick - on his shoulder, quite low, very fresh cut, not too deep, little bleed, not lame ......how would have you dealt with it?

(just the one cut - white stuff is not part of it!!)

We had a horse come in with something similar to that. We called vet out as thought it might need stitching. Vet did nothing and after keeping it clean is now healing very nicely
 
keep it as clean as possible and put nothing on it personally.

My lad came in with a cut tonight too, on his hind heel where he'd kicked out and got caught up in the electric tape I only cleaned it up and left it to heel itself.
 
Leave it to heal itself, obviously providing there's no punctures in there!

I would have cold hosed it for 10 - 15 mins, left it to dry, probably squirted some wound powder in to it, and keep horse in during day away from flies :)
 
If it were me I'd hose it well then squirt over some saline solution. After that I'd probably hose twice a day and keep the flies off. I'd keep a close eye on it just in case of infection.
 
wash off with salt water .. syringed in to hole to flush if deep enough, and cover in manuka honey.. bloody fab stuff, stays put and the flys dont go near it!
 
i tend to spit on a tissue, wipe the xs blood off off, use a fresh tissue with a drop of fresh water and squirt wound powder on and keep an eye on it. I deal mainly with babies from 6 months upwards so they arent used to hosepipes yet!
 
If it was my horse I would clean out with saline solution then call the vet out in case there was a foreign body in there and it might need a couple of stitches. NO POWDER in case needs stitching.
 
Cuts preferably have to be stitched within a very small time period of them happening, 4 or 5 hours the vet said to me when my little pony came in with an almighty cut right up between his back legs and wouldn't let me near it to hose. As it had obviously had happened the night before it was too late to stitch and he was sedated for a thorough scrub. The cut went right down to expose the muscle but a couple days of cold hosing and some pain relief it healed by itself. The vet said 'you'll be surprised how fast he will heal,' and by god I was! Just showed how to me how bloody fast the horse's body can heal itself cos it was one hell of a cut!
 
Had a TO rug on when it happened and noticed when i went to change into fly rug. I cleaned with plain water and put some antibacterial cream over it, its not deep. I then popped rug on so flys cannot get at it so its well covered.
Will clean again tomorrow and apply more cream and keep an eye on it, expecting it to heal within the next few days.

I would have cold hosed to flush out anything that shouldn't be there and then derma gel, I would also have given arnica for a couple of days at least to reduce swelling and speed up healing.
 
Depending on how deep it is, hard to tell from a pic, but if stitches not required then just bath with salt water, keep it clean is the main thing, derma gell is brilliant, I'd defo put something on it though to stop the flies
 
Clean with salt water or mild diluted hibiscrub & put something like 'germoline' or similar on it. Don't use wound powder, it's horrible stuff, it dries out the wound, particularly at the edges & prevents the edges healing properly. The wound needs to remain moist. Ask your vet, he won't use it & also 'purple spray' is hopeless, the stuff we can buy is totally diferent that the stuff the vets have access to.
 
Wash with salt water - teaspoon to a pint of previously boiled water.

Then cover with Active Manuka Honey and it should heal well.

Avoid Hibiscrub on open wounds - it is NOT for use on open wounds. It is a sterilising scrub for cleansing skin prior to surgery.

When my mare split her chest open, three corner tear she advised to pack the wound with salt - it does sting for a very short time, it is a natural part of the body, keeps flies off and heals with minimal scaring.

Wound powder is renowned for generating proud flesh and should only be used for the most miniscule wounds. TBH salt works better.

Wipe any excess blood/dirt off with a clean piece of cotton wool and clean plain water. Then put a bit dollop of sudocrem into it to keep flies off. (sudocrem's got analgesic properties as well as antiseptic) and reapply the sudocrem daily until it's healed.

no hibiscrub or saltwater or hosing as painful.
