My horse has a cut in the corner of his mouth where the bit lies - teeth have been checked. His bit is a good fit.

This seems to be an ongoing problem - I have tried riding in a hackamore but he hates it.

He seems to like his bit (french link eggbut snaffle) and has a very foamy mouth when ridden, very light in my hands so no need to pull or be heavy etc.

I have been applying Prep H cream as suggested on here and vaseline before and after rides, but the cut is still there.

My dentist suggested squirting hydrogen peroxide on it - but won't that hurt!!!!!

Any other suggestions? It doesn't seem to bother him too much, but surely it must be sore.

He had 3 weeks off to let it heal but as soon as the bit went back in his mouth - it cut again.

have you tried rubber bit guards? also theres a product called " The original bit butter" thats ment to be great for healing mouthes.its probably the side joint of the bit that causing it tho-if you dont fancy the rubbers maybe you could try a ported mullen bit which wouldnt pinch at the sides of the mouth?:)

Its actually quite a common problem, some horses just have soft mouths. Both my horse and another on our yard have it. I'm lucky enough to be able to ride her bitless when it crops up but the other horse hates it. We were told to use something called arnica oil which you dilute a few drops in water and then soak a rag in the water, you wrap the rag round their bit and let them stand in it for 20 minutes, its supposed to help harden the skin round the mouth, but I can't remember the name of the website we get ours from.

Also, when you put the vaseline on, do you just put a thin layer on? Cause you really need to put a huge glob on both the bit and in the corner of their mouth

Vaseline dipped in salt will heal it up quick & then put some bitwrap on the bit to prevent it cutting again - solved the same problem with ours xx

Yes, I've had the same problem too, pony with very fleshy lips; I changed his french link jointed bit to a singe jointed bit and don't have a problem anymore, although I don't really like single jointed bits, he goes just as nice in it :)

This most certainly does not mean that he is happy in his mouth, a light covering of saliva on his lips is OK but foaming is a sign that he is uncomfortable. :)
