Axel was leaning really heavily on the left rein today while I was schooling him, he seemed to be wanting to put his nose to the right the whole time. He used to do this a lot but hasn't done it for ages

Anyway when I got off and checked his mouth it was split on the left, poor pony. I put some vaseline on and will have to not ride him until it's healed up. Is there anything else I can put on it that will heal it better?

(btw before anyone has a go at me, Axel was schooled by an event rider for a week and his mouth was cut to ribbons when I got him back and the left side of his mouth has never healed properly and will split at the slightest thing)
I went for a hack on him on Boxing Day and he was very strong and I can only imagine it happened then

Sudocrem, camrosa, or barrier h piles cream is the best, pink skined mare, i have the problem permanently, also i use a hackamore when i can to let it heal!!

Split lips happen, especially in this weather.

You can either use bonjela or human lip balm. My neddy has nivea original to prevent the splits, but only because it was the cheapest lip balm in tesco

Thanks I have a big tub of Sudocrem and Camrosa, I'll put some on him tomorrow x
Don't know if I dare to ride him in a hackamore tho......!!

i usually persuade someone else to go and buy it for me, bonjela is not strong enough if you have a whole the same width as you little finger where the bit lies!! Also get into problems with what is legal for FEI!! ie probably non of it

Given a choice I'd really rather buy bonjela than piles cream.... euggh

Last time this happened I tried to buy some piles cream in Boots and when I told the girl what it was for she refused to sell it to me!!!!

Boots are used to me buying stuff for the horses, tubigrips, dressings, creams, i always say it is for the horses and they just give me an odd look, the piles cream is not POM so i cant see how they can not sell it to you.

You can buy piles cream in supermarkets with no questions asked. It does work well but the best thing is alum solution, if you can find the crystals anywhere.

Unfortunately, once it happens it becomes a weak spot. My gelding split his mouth on electric fencing tape (long story, it got broken and then mixed up in hay - nasty but no-ones fault) and despite a long gap of no riding it kept splitting again.

Things that can work are wrapping the bit in latex and plastering it every time in vaseline, sixth months bitless to let it fully heal and alum solution. Alum is brilliant but very hard to find. I believe boots will get you the crystals (you then soak in warm water and then soak gauze in this, wrap round the bit and let the Horse stand wearing it) but tell them it's for a kids chemistry experiment (to grow crystals) not for Horse use!! Legally I think pharmasists can't sell for animal use.

I found the solution for mine was a myler comfort snaffle. He has a very fleshy mouth and I think the restriction on full collapse is what has helped the most.

i definitely think that haemarroid (sp?!) cream is the best for small splits...i always send my mum to buy it tho!!

its also very good for wrinkles apparently!

we have always used the anusol piles cream which you can by from Tesco's on our eventers.....it works a treat as one of the 4star horses rips his mouth to shreds xc and his mouth is always sooo much better in the morning after using it. It actually got so that with that particular horse, he had to have it on every day as his mouth became so easily cut and so we would put it on immediately after being ridden.

It is also ok under FEI rules as we took tonnes of it to Athens with us for him! - if you think it is embarrassing going into Boots and buying ONE tube of the stuff - imagine my embarrassment when I had to go into the shops and buy SEVEN tubes of the stuff!!! I was willing thr ground to open up and swallow me.....and I got some VERY strange looks from the cashier I can tell you!

Hi, I agree with all the suggestions of using prep H or anusol cream daily. I have a horse with a very sensitive mouth which splits very easily and as soon as it is at all sore he leans terribly on the left rein and so makes it worse very quickly. From lots of experimentation I have found that using a straight bar nathe snaffle wrapped in Sealtex latex bandage (which you can get from horsehealth.co.uk or ebay) works really well in preventing splitting. I also dabb on surgical spirit twice daily when it is not split to harden up the delicate skin in that area and hack him out in a hackamore to give his mouth regular rests from a bit and managed to event him throughout last year without his mouth getting too sore.

Brilliant advice as usual thank you, I'm so pleased I'm not the only person (horse)with this problem!

I might try him in a hackamore, I think my local tack shop has one to hire

Will go and buy loads of piles cream now from Tesco, and I have heard of Alum powder so will look out for that too x
