Cut on a horses leg- A question?

Ive got a horse with a cut on its leg not deep or big. But must of given it a fair old whack as lots of swelling. Ive kept it very clean and there is no infection, but there is like a clear liquidy serum coming out of it, and more comes out if I squeeze it hard. Its definitley not puss, its a clear stickey liquid. What is this and why? Answers greatly appreciated.

. Don't squeeze it; the serum will crust over eventually if you leave it alone.
 
My girl fell and grazed her knee out riding. It was quite an innocent little graze and the vet just said 'keep it clean and hibiscrub'. We did and, like you, there was no immediate infection. A few weeks later and her leg was the size of a house. She had an infection. We managed to get on top of the infection which had been caused by this graze which we'd kept clean and looked after. By the time the infection started to subside, the stress of box rest and the infection/drugs she'd had to take, had caused an acute attack of laminitis. 2 months later we lost her. All started with that innocent graze.

Sounds like what you are doing is right and as Tia says, the clear stuff coming out is normal.

Hollyf, the cut is on the outside of a front leg about 1/2 inch above the bone on side of the knee.
Christmas Carrie 1983 so to here you lost your horse, must of been really frustrating, cos like me you were keeping it really clean.
 
I would be getting the vet to have a look as that is pretty close to the joint, the clear liquid could be joint capsule fluid.

Thats why I asked if it was near a joint. I would be tempted to let the vet look at it to be on the safe side maybe?
 
My mare had a cut very close to her hock joint. At the time it was the only time I'd seen our vet looked worried and there wasn't any fluid leaking at all. Apparently the cut had missed the joint capsule by a millimetre or two. I'd definately always get a cut near a joint checked by the vet.
 
HAPPENED to my horse about 2 weeks ago on the inside of his leg, just above his knee. got the vet out to put my mind at rest - she told me straight away it was just serum coming out. this carried on for about a week, the fluid became thick and yellowy green then gradually diluted and stopped. just really dried up now (2 weeks later). he wasn't lame and i just left him out (didn't stable him - better for him to be able to move around) and i rode him though it as well - under advice from vet! he had a 5 day course of antibiotics.
