Cut on coronet band - any experience/advice?

I brought my horse in this evening and noticed blood on his rubber matting - had a look for the source and found a few small cuts on his coronet band. They look rather superficial but they are bleeding quite a lot. Hosed it off and put some "magic" antiseptic cream on it that my YO had been given by the vet for one of her horses. He is completely sound and there is no swelling so I didn't call the vet, but I haven't had any experience of dealing with a cut on the coronet band so was after some advice. Do they usually heal quite quickly? I was worried about all the blood but apparently they tend to bleed quite a lot.

Any advice appreciated, thanks, Tx

my old loan horse some how came in with a nail sticking out of his coronet band to my horror, i had gotten all the way up to the top of the yard and not noticed until i went to pick his feet out as he wasnt lame or even appearing to be in any pain. pulled the nail out and it did bleed alot
Owner (who owned the yard) poured some liquid peroxide (im sure that is what it was) and that tends to stop the bleeding throughly cleans it out. stabled him overnight just in case but it was a small scab the next day and healed with no marks. dont think my old boy even noticed it.

So keep it clean until it starts healing just in case, and he should be fine :)

My mare did it twice - on each foot she has matching scars.:(

Its not a bad place, but is hard to keep clean - on straw it was fine, on shavings it needed bandaging to keep the shavings from sticking to it. Also be aware that mudrash can get in via cuts, so I would keep them out of the mud if possible until the cut is dry and sealed.

Thank you, it is good to know that it shouldn't be too serious and that the bleeding is normal. It wasn't a puncture wound so I'm not worried about anything being in there, due to the fresh blood I think he must have done it just before I brought him in - there was a little scuffle with the other horses at the gate so it probably happened then.

He is on straw so it should stay reasonably clean tonight, I will put some more of this cream on tomorrow morning. It is quite sticky so he should be able to go out, the fields are only really muddy by the gate. I will also put some sudocrem on top so there is a barrier.

My mare had one and it took a month to fully heal,it kept opening and bleeding. I kept her on concrete yard so it didn't get muddy....
I put the green antibiotic steroids gel on once and two days later it was sealed and hair was growing

Did you get that gel from the vet? Thanks, will be worth keeping in mind if it doesn't heal properly.

My mare did a good job of a puncture wound to her coronet a few years back. Was non weight bearing for about a month... Had the vet out immediately who gave her 2 days of IV antibiotics and also oral antib's plus lots and lots of pain relief. 3 months later she was able to be turned out and remain on 4 legs, rather than walking for 10 mins then coming in on 3 legs.

Speshul horse has healed fine with no further problems and hers was quite a serious one. Vet was considering possibly PTS if no improvement. ... Turns out she had a mega infection in her joint space.

Beware. My mare had a tiny wound on her coronet that I bathed in saline. No lameness etc and forgot about it. Three weeks later she went hopping lame. Turned out to be a massive hoof abscess near the top. She ended up having the whole of the front of her hoof parred away and nine months off work! Be very careful. Bath twice daily and flush out wounds for a week.

Thanks for the replies, I can't write much now as I'm on my phone but I think I will be keeping him in tomorrow now, just so that I can be sure that it's healed in a clean environment. Hopefully he will still be sound, like I said the wounds do seem fairly superficial.

To the person who sent me a pm - thank you, for some teaspoon

My mare came in with this, in january, she was on box rest for a couple of weeks with foot wrapped up, poluticed and washed out twice a day. it kept opening back up and bleeding, turned out to be an absess, not nice. She now lives in over reach boots simply cuz i do not want a repeat of this :)

One of our horses received a fairly deep cut the back of his hoof due to pawing a barbed wire fence. We rinsed the cut with a water hose twice a day for 20 min; then applied Corona ointment and VetWraped the cut with a gauze pad. The wound healed quickly- surprising given the severity of the injury. The key is to rinse the wound often. You do not have to spray the water, just let it flush the wound. Hope this helps.

I found my mare in the field like this back in July after getting caught in stock wire. We had to bandage it every 2/3 days for 9 weeks. First 2 weeks she was on box rest. Had healed up lovely then on bonfire night she over reached and cut it open again. Another month of dressing and it's healed again. Like PingPong Pony she is now living in over reach boots as I can't go through this a third time.

She was never lame through all of it, there is some hoof damage but that should grow out in time, but if there is permanent damage to the hoof farrier isn't to worried as it's not where the nails go.

Thank you again for the replies and sorry that I couldn't respond yesterday. My horse's injury certainly isn't as severe as the those that have been posted about, but it is reassuring to know that all your horses have recovered well.

It looked really good and dry yesterday morning but then this morning it looked like it had opened up again so I hibiscrubbed it and put more of the antiseptic cream on. Yesterday I only used the antiseptic cream as I didn't want to disturb the healing process. I'm hoping tonight that it will have dried up again. Fortunately he is still sound and there is no heat/swelling so I hope that I have prevented it from getting infected so far.

For those who are living in overreach boots, how do you prevent them from rubbing the horse raw? My horse gets rubs after a couple of hours wearing them. :(

my mare wear the westropp petal OR boots, and i must say that i have never had it rub, it doesn't even leave a mark, plus mud doesn't get stuck in them so that stops rubbing too :) just experiment with different brands, but i also think that some horses are just more prone to rubbing than others :)
