cut on hock, what would you do?

Nits got kicked on the hock, vet has been out and given her some AB's and she's still on Norodine.

She has been left out with hosing/hibiscrubbing to help the swelling go down. Vet was out on Saturday and most of the swelling has gone now (apart from immediately round the wound) but the daft filly is clearly knocking the scab off the cut every day so it isn't closing up brilliantly.

Would you bring in or leave out? Would you try and dress it?

I don't really want to bring her in as she will worry and stress but I'm quite keen for it to close up now!

Suggestions please :)
 
I would keep up the cold hosing and gently pat dry the wound with a cotton makeup removal pad, one that won't leave threads in the wound, then put on a blob of bright yellow summer fly ointment over it, it stops fly strike and has iodine in it to keep it clean.I had to use this on a wound that couldnt be stitched and it is a permanent member in my first aid kit now .
you could clip around the area and morrisons supermarket do a good sized non adherant dressing that sticks on fairly well to clipped skin, again used on a wound to an area thet couldnt be bandaged but needed covered, good luck
 
My horse cut his leg open and it was summer time so he was living out, he kept on knocking the scab off too, someone recommended using some pure aloe vera jelly and applying liberally to the wound after hosing, this did the trick and there is now no trace of scar or anything.
 
My mare cut her hock a few weeks ago. She stayed out to keep the joint moving and was on antibs for a few days. The wound was cold hosed for a week and half and she only has swelling around the wound itself now instead of the whole leg.
We had a few issues with flies and the vet gave me a barrier cream that we put on top of the antibiotic cream to put a barrier on the cut and its healing up lovely.

I'd try and keep her out as it will help aid the healing process for you. Might be worth trying a barrier cream to allow the wound to heal but keep the flies out.
 
I would leave out, stop washing it and perhaps be inclined to put a small dressing on it for a few days.
 
Having tried to dress wounds on the hock previously and failed miserably! I now leave them open, with the yellow summer fly stuff on, or green oils :)
 
hmmm, I think if she keeps knocking it (perhaps when she's rolling or laying down?) so it's not closing and drying up I'd be temped to stick good old Gold Label wonder gel on, bob a very light dressing over the top and cover with neoprene hock boot, may not be the answer but I'd try it myself, may just give that bit of extra protection and keep it clean perhaps as well as keep the flys out, however I'd still wash it daily, you don't want it getting too warm and sweaty under a hock boot so it's vital you keep the wound clean and allow air to circulate.
 
I'm happy to try dressing it but I think she'll just have anything I put on there off within minutes. She's a bit mischievous like that! It'd have to be small or she'd definitely be after it. I can see bits of nappy floating around the paddock now! Especially as BH would definitely help her the old goat!

I have been putting sudocreme on to try and keep the flys out but obviously when she takes off the scab she takes that with it. Silly filly is just so 'in' to everything.

Will go to the pharmacy and try and get some melolin dressings for her and see if I can persuade one to stick!
 
If flies aren't too bad I'd put manuka honey on it. If they are going to worry her try sudocrem. That way she can stay out. If she gets stressed in she may do something worse.
