My poor girl has somehow (?) cut her rear leg - right in the middle of her canon bone ... this was done a few weeks ago and although it healed, it's now opened back up again (vet originally came out at the time it was done). Vet came back out (different person from the practise) and she's now in, all bandaged up on box rest until it heals ... obviously it's a bad area as not much flesh on the bone ... anyone else had similar - how long in terms of weeks/months did it take to completely heal? She was treated/dressed Thursday which needs to stay on til weekend then redressing until Tues/Wed next week when the vet wants to see how it's healing ... :D

My 20 month old filly did this a few weeks ago jumping over her stable. It was deep enough to not look past but not so bad I thought I required vet treatment. It was about an inch long. Initially it looked good and I cold hosed and put flamazine on. Box resting was out of the question. However, she remained sound so turn out was fine. Once a decent looking scab formed I guess I got complacent and rather than pester her more I left be. About a week later I was grooming her leg when I thought I'd have a feel. The scab was rather large and after pressing it, pus came from beneath. I scrubbed with hibiscrub and removed the scab to reveal proud flesh - fantastic! I applied rosemary and sulphur cream and bandaged. I did this every day for a week until she turned dangerous when I went anywhere near the leg. By now it had closed up by half and flesh shrunk away. I have now been hosing again and am.at about a cm. We are looking about about a month nearly... Almost there!

Oh lord, nightmare for you ... was she lame at all or stiff? my poor girl lifts her leg as high as possible and hops around the barn on thee legs ... gymnastics styleeee ... then puts it down, realises its not quite that bad and walks normally (if a little ouchy) x

Not wanting to be bearer of bad news but have u had it xrayed? Mine did this in July and he had fractured his cannon bone. We didn't know for 4 weeks though before it became obvious! Have a look at some of the threads I made at the time for more info or pm me

OP, not in the slightest. I seem to have been very lucky. Other than negligible swelling and a little heat she has been fine! Maybe a little stiff but then it has been pretty. darn cold in those fields! Hope your girl is better very soon!

My old mare did her left hind cannon twice in the two years I had her, once in the trailer and once putting her foot through a drain cover, I bandaged for a week then slathered manuka honey on the wound daily and left it open to the air and I had no proud flesh and the wound were healed to small scabs within weeks. I think the second time she did it she was back out competing after four/five weeks.

Hi and thanks for your replies :D
This is the next step … Im changing the bandage over tomorrow .. then the vet have said to redo again until Tuesday at which point I can take a photo to show him or he will come back out … if no progress then xrays will be done … today for the first time she actually walked straight out without any acrobatics so good sign … (hopefully)

on the pad there's manuka honey and another cream (cant remember the name now) xxx
