I always use scissors. First trim with nornal scissors, then at about half a cm from the end use the thinning scissors to make it look natural. Neat, tidy mane in under 10 minutes and it looks natural.

Yep I have done it too as others do.
I do remember helping someone at a livery yard we used to be on. My friend and I had been schooling and sorting her pony out for her as she was selling him. I mentionned that he could do with a bit of smartening up and she jumped at the chance to do that. Result was a forelock similar to the pics posted and a mane with a straight line. On a welsh pony with a thick mane it looked horrendous. We went to field to discover him like that and a few minutes later owner showed up and said that she'd got someone coming to view him, whoops!

This... I snip upwards into the mane to make it look less squared off and it's fine...

Yes, poor Pinto did look suitably embarrassed until his forelock grew again. The reason it was cut short... my sharer was worried he couldn't see from underneath it - and it wasn't even that long :/
It did grow out eventually, though I did ask her not to go near my horse with scissors in her hand again

I always cut to about an inch longer than I want with scissors then set to with the Solo comb to thin the ends and bring it up to the length I want.

What happened to mane pulling skills?
I was horrified when someone did something to my [well not mine exactly] racehorse when he was out on hunting livery, it took months to recover,in the meantime I had to plait up with ridiculous dressage type plaits!
Then some person took the mane off my andalusian with a roller comb thing ......... I did not need to ask how they did it, it was obvious.
I asked someone to help me with clipping my boy, so I could do between his legs, before I could say anything she snatched clippers off me and took his whiskers off!
