Well driving home today and came across two horse and riders and a bike. The bike rider was holding onto the saddlecloth and using the horse to tow him along. Now i thought this was a bit dangerous ie if horse spooked bike could go over/ under horse or bike could hit rock and end up under horse....

Is that just me getting old and paranoid (well i am 23 now

) or would you class as dangerous?

Also while i am on the subject; when you ride out with others do you ride side by side or one infront of the other? These two riders were side by side and the road was quite narrow to get past....

Anyways thats my thoughts for the day...i'm either getting old and parinoid or some people are just willing to take more risks then me!

If you have a young / nervous horse, it is common to ride with a sensible older horse on the side nearest traffic to get the other horse used to it, prevetn the young horse moving his bum into the road etc. Also when doing ride and lead, you don't have much option but to be side by side. Many people ride side by side to make cars take notice of them - cars often tend to squeeze by single file riders, which is very dangerous, but if they have to treat them as they would another car, overtaking correctly / waiting for a gap, it can be safer. That said, I do tend to ride single file but where I used to do roadwork, it made sense for us.

Sounds like the horse was completely used to that sort of thing. At the end of the day,if people do stupid things and they get killed, they certainly won't do it again and the gene pool probably benefits.

As to road width, if it was narrow I'd go single file. There is no guarantee a driver coming the other way would stop in time so at least he would have a bigger gap to squeeze through

My OH and I ride side by side to slow down traffic then when we can see the traffic making a point to slow down we move to single file at this point we thank them, works for us.
