Anyone do it?

I cycle on to tesco on an old railway line which is now a cyclepath, its about 6mile round trip and my dog runs in front. He loves it, gets almost as excited over bike coming out as he does with the ball launcher. He's a 2 1/2 yr old jrt x (prob collie) and is an active dog and fit.
He is fine doing this distance and i dont go too fast, just so he's doing an active canter but any further or if i do it more than a few days in a row he gets sore feet. I find it a great way to burn off some of his endless energy but i dont want to do him any harm.
At the side of the path is an almost continuous grass verge but he wont stay on it.
Now I want to do more cycling for exercise for me and it seems a shame to leave him behind so i figured i have three choices

1 leave him behind on the longer rides

2 get something to toughen his feet up (saw something on animal cops they put on pitbulls feet)

3 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bike-Traile...sr_1_4?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1309684014&sr=1-4

get one of these and he can run the original distance then hop on for a ride the rest of the way?

Ideas?

Have tried the shaws paw wax and not noticed it made any difference except in the snow and ice. How far is it fair to expect tim to be able to run on a road surface? just a bit wary as i wouldn't run my horse on hard going, is it the same for dogs?

Best boots ever all of the um people here will tell you that and cheap.

Abe pulls a bike or a scooter

I did have his hips checked first.

I taught him directional commands and to stay on the verge when I ask.

I second dogbooties.com.

We have a whole box of boots and sometimes our collie wears them when he goes mountain biking with husband. I wouldn't run on a road surface for very far to be honest, if at all. It would wear their claws down very quickly. We have never had problems with the huskies running other than claws wearing down, and even then it's pretty rare (though they have tough feet and obviously not running on the roads). However, the collie does sometimes get a sore foot now and again, normally from skidding about after a ball though!!

Nothing wrong with 6 miles at all. Our collie frequently does a lot further than that and of course so do our huskies in the running season (when it's cold!!). I wouldn't use wax - like you say it's really only useful for snow.

thanks, he's happy with the 6 miles and even if i go a bit further to the feed shop maybe makes it 8-10 miles. i will try teaching him to stay on the verge where pos. I'm sure its not the distance thats the prob more the road surface. Will look into the boots, had tried some before when he'd got a grass cut between his toes but they were hard boots and as mentioned they didn't stay put and ket slipping
