Cyprus

Not from there but have been spending 4 weeks a year there for the last 20 years. Also have a lot of ex-pat and cypriot friends who live there if that's any help!

Well I am looking to move there in a few years time and was hoping, wondering if there were any competent natural horse trainers there. I would like to take my horse with me and was hoping that maybe just maybe there would be a livery that has such methods. Thinking along the lines of round pens, etc????

I would imagine it depends where you go. I don't know of any in Paphos but I do know a lad who showjumps and has a trainer so they have to be there. Don't know what standard he's at I'm afraid. You and you're ne are going to get hot and sweaty!! :)

Thank you for your reply. Perhaps when you are next out there (if you are doing anything Horsey) you might ask around. Anyway kinda looking forward to hot and sweaty. Make a change from wet and wind swept.:)

No probs. Not going out again this year but do keep in touch with friends so will ask them to put out feelers. Will let you know if I have any luck. :)

Might be worth contacting the stables on the bases see if anyone can point you in the right direction ... Akrotiri episkopi have stables (or used to when I was there) etc benefit that they'll all speak English :)

There are also military stables at Dhekelia (where I learnt to ride many moons ago) and Ayios Nikolios (further up from Dhekelia).

Dhekelia Saddle club have a Facebook page, it might be worth messaging the Yard Manager. I haven't searched for the other saddle clubs. I'm sure you'll get some help from Facebook no matter which end of the Island you're going to. I assume you are moving to the South and not the North???

Hi there,

Lived in Cyprus for 6 years with a horse so know a little bit:-)

Try the main Saddle Club at Episkopi Garrison, Ask to speak to Paul who is the instructor there.

Drapia Farm at Kalavassos is where I used to keep my horse they have sandschool, round pen and fabulous hacking:-) Marissa is the owner there she is Swiss, her instructor is Austrian and they are both very into the natural approach lovely people.

Anything else I can help with PM me.

Good luck best years of my riding life were had in Cyprus x

Thank you very much for your information. I am going out on holiday there so maybe I could go riding there and certainly touch base with them. Was the livery good?? and please tell me about the lovely hacking.

Livery was very good, horses were kept in sand paddocks each with their own wooden sunshade, mine had his own olive tree:-)) Paddocks cleaned twice a day.

Beware though it is very very different to what you will be used to in the UK, horses are fed all calorific needs in hard feed (we fed Bran, barley and Alfafa nuts) then they will be given straw for forage there is no hay. Both Paul at Epi and Marissa will be able to advise you on how to get your horse happily used to the change, only real advice from me would be only travel it out there between October and February to give it time to slowly acclimatize to the heat.

Hacking is truly out of this world from the yard the only way is up! you have some superb mountain rides with good fast gallops of anything between 3 hours and a day with a picnic stop!....when you go over ask to do the "Pasata" ride which will take you up into the mountains then through the country until you come out looking over a ring of mountains with the dam beneath it you then wind your way back down into the valley again....it was always my favorite and has a wonderful very steep hill which the experienced riders can gallop up, when you near the top your hands are nearly round your horses ears then on the top you have four strides to stop before a steep walk down again....all the horses know it and it is a real thrill:-))

Great advice and a beautiful horse. I will definitely book a ride with them. I was planning on living near paphos but now I might have to look at Limissol. I ride western style so Drapia farm looks just what I am looking for. Thank you .:)

The area between Limassol and Larnaca is really beautiful, I actually used to live in Kalavassos Village really lovely place and sooooooo quiet, if you want noise Limassol is only 20 mins away,Pafos has far too many retired Brits there:-)
