Hi,

Has anyone had experience of a mare with cycstic ovaries and could advise what the symptoms are and treatments?

I have a mare I have only owned a few months....In the last week she has started refusing to canter when being ridden in the school, stopping dead, bucking, kicking out all with her ears flat back....

My vet has put her on regumate, which she has been on for 4 days but no change....he mentioned cycstic ovaries....

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Some mares get ovarian cysts - usually one ovary becomes enlarged and the other shrinks - did your vet do an internal examination to check your mare's ovaries? There is also another condition where they do not ovulate properly and seem to be in season all the time. How old is your mare? Mine behaved very similarly when she was younger but the vet said she would probably improve with age and she has - I also give her a natural supplement which I think has helped her. I've never used regumate but suspect it may take more than 4 days to kick in. Good luck!

Thanks for your help!
She is 8...
She has never had seasons like this, was always unmareish (I bought her in the winter but have known her for a while)....Last year, she was tried to put into foal but didnt get pregnant.....My vet said that this can kickstart serious seasons!!
I havent had the vet out yet, as already had the regumate......He did an internal on her a couple of months ago cos I was convinced she was preggars! She was so fat...
Now she is skinny!!! She has dropped loads of condition in the past couple of weeks too.....He said this could also be related...
I had her back checked today and there was nothing obvious....Her saddles were done a couple of months ago also.....
I guess as she was already in season when she had the regumate, it wont bring her out? And I have to wait longer...
