I'm looking to move Fabio onto one of these for the winter - he has mild shivers so i follow the high oil, low sugar, low starch approach for him.

I came across the ERS pellets the other day in the feed store and they sound ideal - with the exception they are designed for horses in medium to hard work. He isn't! He gets ridden 5-6 times a week but certainly can't class him in hard work. Have looked online and seen the Allen and Page Sugar and Ceral Intolerance diet, which seems similar but designed for less workload. Anyone had experiences with either of these? Could i feed the ERS pellets at lower quantities than recommended?

Also, thinking on putting my OH's horse on the same, figure that the same diet couldn't hurt him. Although he's not so good a doer as Fabio but could bulk his out with some beet and chaff?

I used ERS pellets with my mare who tied up in much less quantitys than D&H said 2 use & I mean much less!
I spoke 2 their nutritionist & said it was feed I was looking for but no way could I feed in those qtys- only thing she said was 2 make sure she got her vits etc as wouldn't get full requirement due to less feed given.
That wasn't problem for me as she got supplement anyway.
I was worried as it was originally designed for racehorses with azoturia that it might blow her brains but totally unfounded- no difference in behaviour just gave her nice shiny coat!

Only thing I'd say is get a trial pack from D&H as it seemed 2 b an acquired taste almost as I occasionally used a few as a treat for other horses & some of them point blank refused 2 eat them?!

Kal has been getting ERS Pellets for a good five/six months now and it doesn't seem to matter if he has a drop in work (he has pretty much had the past three weeks off) - he doesn't fizz up. Kal really likes them . . . and he can be quite picky (took me ages to get him to eat micronised linseed, for example).

Hope that helps.

Thanks Polarskye - do you feed in the quantities they advise or do you feed at a reduced rate?
