Has anyone else noticed that the make up of this feed has changed? It used to have quite large round pieces of feed in with the chaff - the bag I last bought has very few large round pieces and lots of small round pieces.

Not sure if this is is a dodgy bag that I have bought - was a new style bag (first one I have bought)

Any way the first night I fed this my horse went into choke but cleared quite quickly after a few good coughs (about 10 minutes)

Tonight (eighth day of feeding) however she went into choke and it did not clear - had to get vet out and he asked to see the feed. His opinion is that the small round bits are too small and that is what has caused it - the size and shape means they don't get chewed and go straight down the throat.

Teeth etc all fine and no problems with throat that would cause this and this horse is a delicate eater - not one to bolt her feed.

I have used this feed for a number of years and very happy with it so will be really disappointed if this is a change in the feed as vet has advised to stop feeding it immediately.

Anyone else noticed a change?

they are still making the same chaff its just that it is in more of a bale shape as its said to be easier for storing not sure why they changed the overall dynamics of the feed though, i'd give them a call to complain that your horse has suffered due to it however in some places you can still buy the ones with the big things in ity

Thats interesting. I still have a bag of the old type by the sounds of things. Would definately give them a call they are usually very helpful.

yes its still meant to be the same - nothing on the bag to say otherwise.

As you say is now in bale type bags and I'm wondering if the round bits are breaking up during compression??

Got me worried now!! I also feed this to my very old rescue mare and she had choke the other morning, had to get the vet out (£130).
Aside from the cost it is a horrible thing to witness your horse go through.
Was going to the feed merchant today to get more supplies but may leave it till Monday and call D&H first.

Is the bag you are feeding one of the new type bags? and have you noticed that the round bits are smaller in that bag?

I will also be phoning D&H can you let me know how you get on.

My vets bill isn't going to be cheap either - after hours call out !!

Anyone else who is feeding this please be careful just in case - and if you have had choke with feed from the new bag can you let me know - PM if you prefer

This is only the 2nd bag I have purchased, they are plastic and not unlike the ones alpha a is packed in.
My pony has eating issues, she will not even take carrots!!!,I have tried all sorts of feed and then a friend gave me a sample to try her and tempt her and because she ate it I have been feeding it ever since.
Have just had a good look and the 'bits' do look smaller than the sample she gave me. Will pop down to see her later and see what she thinks.
Sorry this turned into an essay!!

My latest bag is different, as is a friends. I'm not happy about it, but it's one of the fesw chaffs that Jim likes so I can't really change to something else.
