D&H Safe & Sound - Alfalfa . Feed company rant/labelling

Why oh why is Alfalfa in EVERYTHING (almost anyway) these days. My mare was coming up in terrible lumps which became more and more difficult to control with steroids. Had her properly tested. Turned out she has allergies to alfalfa and dust mites.
Baileys Easy Rider sadly now discontinued and cardboard bedding have given her a lifeline. Feeding her is not easy. Grazing and hay/haylage. I'm exploring Ozzichaff advanced now.

Mollichaff Calmer is alfalfa-free I believe - well my horse won't eat alfalfa and he likes that! He won't eat garlic either so finding him a feed is tricky, so I stick to that. It's not got much molasses in - he's lami prone too and does well on it.
It's loads better than Happy Hoof, Healthy Hooves, HiFi Molasses-free and Safe & Sound! Tried them all...

For people looking for just chopped hay or chopped straw - have you thought about making your own? A B&Q garden shredder makes great chaff - then you can be sure exactly what is in it.
One £3 bale of good quality oat straw and an hour with a shredder and you'd have almost a winters worth of chaff.

What a brilliant idea :D I have a redundant garden shredder in my shed !

Another here using Mollichaff Calmer. It doesn't contain alfalfa and is not sticky like some chops. My mare doesn't have it for the calmer side of things but because she turns into a div on alfalfa.

I loved the Badminton East Rider too (boo hiss Baileys :( ) I now use this:

http://www.haysoft.co.uk/

The do a plain non mollassed hay chaff and an unmollassed straw chop

Thank you for posting this. I have used Safe and Sound for years but I will need to find a replacement now they have changed the ingredients. I went in search of the Haysoft chaff at the feed store today and bought a bag of the Oat chaff - it's lovely. Fatso might not agree but I have his best interests at heart. ;)

I also miss Easy Rider and have now switched to Mollichaff calmer. Hmmm I might look into the shredder idea though ......................

I know this is an old thread… I emailed D&H regarding this and this was the reply I got back “Good morning - it does not directly contain alfalfa, however there may be traces of alfalfa in the grass meal used in the product (as it is a variety of grass types)”

I will be checking the bag when I get to the yard as I know it doesn’t say alfalfa free but I didn’t think it was an ingredient that’s in the recipe only like their reply above, there maybe traces…

Ive always been under the impression this is alfalfa free - infact the ingredients found online dont list alfalfa. However i noticed in the feed shop this morning that the label stuck on a bag DID list alfalfa. I have just spoken to D&H who confirmed that yes, it does contain alfalfa. So many people seem to be under the impression it doesnt. I dont understand why feed companies cant clearly label and list ingredients

So can anyone recommend a chaff that has no alfalfa in it and isnt high in sugar/energy either, so ruling out the likes of readigrass.
Marksway do a good range that includes alfalfa free. Their Light Molasses Free is good.
