Any one who saw and commented on my confused thread re. Pony with no steering when ridden....a little update!
He has regained a bit of "mouth"- First I decided to try and hack him out rather than ride in the field. My theory being hacking involves straighter lines along defined tracks and pathways (obviously not near or on roads) I also figured if it was too awful I could easily dismount and lead the little fellow home. We followed my daughter riding my horse- who helpfully had several nervous breakdowns along the way at various things
He was good (as in we were going in the correct direction and had brakes)
So we hacked again and again he was really quite good, slightly more chilled than the first time. This time we left the bridleway and did a few minutes on a road, actually a restricted byway so very little traffic but we did meet one car which he handled perfectly. He's never been frightened of traffic however heavy or large a vehicle but when we meet it he seems very nervous to stand on a verge and wait. He's actually best if drivers wizz past! (but my nerves suffer then!)
So I bit the bullet and have arranged a saddler to come and fit a second hand "new" saddle for him next week as things were going well.
Yesterday we tried him in the field again alone. I walked alongside but after a while dropped back and my daughter walked admittedly a weird circle round me but considering 2 weeks ago there was no steering what so ever we are thrilled to bits.
He's still the greenest 6 year old in history but I think we just might be coming out the other side of the most hideous years horse ownership ever!
Wish us luck! and thanks to all who's commented and advised and kept us going!
