I don't even know what words best describe Charlie today, I can't believe the state he got himself into!

I was out hacking with Charlie (16.2hh TB) and was leading my Section A (Millie) off him, we were having a lovely time and where heading for home when we came across THE MOST terrifying thing Charlie has ever come across
crazy.gif

Being led down the road towards us was a gorgeous, fluffy baby Donkey (Looked just Like Donklets Pebbles

). Straight away I thought 'ooh, this could be interesting' as I had never come across another horse/Donkey whilst doing ride and lead.

Charlie obviously thought the same because as soon as he saw the BD (Baby Donkey) his head went up, he started snorting and went behind the leg. I pushed him forward which he tentatively responded to.

As we get closer to the BD I began to think we would get past in one piece but unfortunately the BD decided that Charlie in all his fluorescent gear was the most scariest thing that he had ever seen, spun round and shot off away from us.

Charlie completely freaked
shocked.gif
spun right round and took of in the opposite direction to which the BD had gone. I pulled him up and tried to calm him but he was in such a state that he was cantering sideways down the road (dragging Millie with him) and threatening to rear. I soon realized that there was no way I would be able to ride him past the BD (who was now under control further up the road) so as soon as he stood still for long enough I jumped of and started leading him towards the BD.

He then grew to about 18hh and decided to drag me towards the BD

So with Charlie dragging me, and me dragging Millie we get nearer to the BD, still lots of snorting and spooking going on but at least we are heading in the right direction.

As we start to pass the BD I breath a sigh of relief thinking the Drama was now over! How wrong I was
crazy.gif
Charlie completely lost the plot, he obviously thought the 'Horse Eating' BD was going to turn around and pounce on him as he then tried to gallop off for home, Que more dragging of Millie and I, luckily I managed to keep hold of him, turned him into the hedge and tried to calm him down. Then Off he set again, lots more spinning, cantering on the spot, pouncing forward, dragging of Millie and I (and me thinking Oh Sh!t I'm going to have to let him go!) later and the BD was finally out of sight!

Just like a light being switch off Charlie was back to his normal Calm 'ish' self

I finally managed to re-mount him and off we head for home, with me dripping in sweat, Charlie still snorting like a pig and yep you guessed it, Millie being dragged behind (she found the Drama far to tiring and wouldn't keep up for the rest of the ride)! On a Plus side I got some lovely trot work out of him on the way back
grin.gif

I genuinely do think he was scared, he can be a complete prat at times (he's the type that spooks at Grass, leaves, and Snow

) but in the 6 years I have owned him I have NEVER know him to get into such a state

So why do I think he is Daft, Stupid, Ridiculous etc?!?

Because he shares his field and Barn with this......

He may not be as cute or fluffy as the BD but he is still a donkey!!

I think next time I see a donkey heading toward me I will turn round and head in the opposite direction

That's made my evening 3B, made me laugh out loud. No two donkeys are alike you must know that!

Glad you managed to keep control of the situation!

I can understand Charlie getting so wound up,
I have met donkeys as well out on hacks, and I have never managed to get any of my horses past a donkey without having to dismount. I have no idea, why they find them so very scary, but my ones just snort and shy at them. The donkey just stand there, and dont have a clue, whats wrong with the horse!!

If it's any consolation, one of my donkeys gets scared of horses sometimes. What a cutie Charlie lives with
grin.gif

My mare always makes a big song and dance about going past donkeys (but she doesn't share a field with one!). I don't know if they are the latest accessory, but donkeys seem to be springing up in fields all around our hacking routes. As a girl I don't think I ever saw a donkey - now they seem to be everywhere?!

Ha ha , My old horse was terriffied of donkeys each time we passed the donkey named Thunder ! up the road he completly lost the plott sometimes just when I possibly thaught we would get past without causing a traffic jam a mile long thunder would let out an almighty ehore and my boy would freak out yet he was the most bombproof horse apart from push bikes and his nemesis thunder , sadly my lad has now died but yet always makes me smile and chuckle to myself when i see thunder grazing in his field !

We have 2 donklets in the firld next to ours - and even though my guys see them every single day, the donks inspire sheer terror.

Even though the pillocks manage to be brave enough to approach the fence, as soon as any of the donks "talk" off they go in terror. There is an uneaten semicircle in one of our fields next to the donkey's field! 25 yards seems to be the safe distance.

Maybe donkeys used to be prehistoric predators and ate baby horses!!!!

omg! that sounds terrifying but so funny!! worst del has done (so far.. there's time for him to full on freak out yet!!) was trotting merrily down the road when there was an evil DEAD BIRD on the floor! i didn't even see it until his head shot down and he just flew sideways!!! would've thought he'd have been happy to see that, he hates birds.....
laugh.gif

Glad Charlie isn't the only one scared of silly things
grin.gif
I hate to think what he's going to do when he notices the White Ostriches in the field down the road

We have same problem with pony and traps on the road.

I've had that too. Was riding a cob once and he completely freaked out at a horse and cart coming towards us...never mind that he is broken to ride and drive...

Horses, seriously. Why do we do it?

No some horses are frightened of them. My old skewbald tried to climb a tree with me on his back, when we rode past a house and they had 2 donkeys, he nearly killed us as a car was coming towards us as he shot across the road and up the bank, luckerly the car driver saw what was happening and slammed on his brakes. And I could never get Merlin to go on that bit of road again.

Yes a very mature 14 year old

The BD was dark grey and much fluffier then Charlie's field mate (that he also shares a haynet with
smirk.gif
), but you'd think he would be able to tell it was still a donkey
grin.gif

Pedantic - I really hope I never meet a pony and trap, it may just finish him (or me!!) off
