I don't even know what words best describe Charlie today, I can't believe the state he got himself into!
I was out hacking with Charlie (16.2hh TB) and was leading my Section A (Millie) off him, we were having a lovely time and where heading for home when we came across THE MOST terrifying thing Charlie has ever come across
Being led down the road towards us was a gorgeous, fluffy baby Donkey (Looked just Like Donklets Pebbles
). Straight away I thought 'ooh, this could be interesting' as I had never come across another horse/Donkey whilst doing ride and lead.
Charlie obviously thought the same because as soon as he saw the BD (Baby Donkey) his head went up, he started snorting and went behind the leg. I pushed him forward which he tentatively responded to.
As we get closer to the BD I began to think we would get past in one piece but unfortunately the BD decided that Charlie in all his fluorescent gear was the most scariest thing that he had ever seen, spun round and shot off away from us.
Charlie completely freaked
spun right round and took of in the opposite direction to which the BD had gone. I pulled him up and tried to calm him but he was in such a state that he was cantering sideways down the road (dragging Millie with him) and threatening to rear. I soon realized that there was no way I would be able to ride him past the BD (who was now under control further up the road) so as soon as he stood still for long enough I jumped of and started leading him towards the BD.
He then grew to about 18hh and decided to drag me towards the BD
So with Charlie dragging me, and me dragging Millie we get nearer to the BD, still lots of snorting and spooking going on but at least we are heading in the right direction.
As we start to pass the BD I breath a sigh of relief thinking the Drama was now over! How wrong I was
Charlie completely lost the plot, he obviously thought the 'Horse Eating' BD was going to turn around and pounce on him as he then tried to gallop off for home, Que more dragging of Millie and I, luckily I managed to keep hold of him, turned him into the hedge and tried to calm him down. Then Off he set again, lots more spinning, cantering on the spot, pouncing forward, dragging of Millie and I (and me thinking Oh Sh!t I'm going to have to let him go!) later and the BD was finally out of sight!
Just like a light being switch off Charlie was back to his normal Calm 'ish' self
I finally managed to re-mount him and off we head for home, with me dripping in sweat, Charlie still snorting like a pig and yep you guessed it, Millie being dragged behind (she found the Drama far to tiring and wouldn't keep up for the rest of the ride)! On a Plus side I got some lovely trot work out of him on the way back
I genuinely do think he was scared, he can be a complete prat at times (he's the type that spooks at Grass, leaves, and Snow
) but in the 6 years I have owned him I have NEVER know him to get into such a state
So why do I think he is Daft, Stupid, Ridiculous etc?!?
Because he shares his field and Barn with this......
He may not be as cute or fluffy as the BD but he is still a donkey!!
I think next time I see a donkey heading toward me I will turn round and head in the opposite direction
