Thinking of jumping horsey. He jumps 1m+ neatly with other riders, I've done v little (previous horses preferences & my own) but enjoy the odd x-pole, not jumped with him before. Was planning on pole on ground, pole at angle, little x-poles progression, probably just from trot the first time. Not sure how to space them though... in a line one after the other? randomly around arena? near edges? in middle? Arena is 40x40m-ish I think and horsey is 14.3hh. Will likely be only (horsey) person around so don't want to put them at awkward distances or anything... not used to this much space/choice!

Thanks!

I would just set up a little course of x-poles and throw some ground poles around too. if you're not sure about distances and you'll be on your own i wouldn't even attempt them. You can put a placing pole three of your own paces in front of a jump just to help to get there. When you set them up just think about how you'll get to each one from the previous one. You can also just throw some poles around to trot over without being too structured it's surprising how you can fit things together
