We've recently been allowed to fence off an area of the field by our house. Some of the electric fence is attached (by insulators, of course) to the post and rail that runs between our garden and the field; and around the horse area the lower run of electric rope is fairly low, as one of the horses is a mini-shelt. Our cats like to go into the field to chase mice, and usually do so via the post and rail. One in particular likes to lie on the wooden rail to mouse-spot, so my OH was asking what would happen if the cats touched the electric?

Will it do them any harm, given they are rather small compared to the size of my horse?. I'm working on the assumption that a) you can use them for chickens, so it's probably fine and b) yards across the country have electric fencing and cats, so again, it's probably fine. But I said I'd ask :)

Cats only zap themselves once, after that they learn very quickly to limbo underneath fencing:) Mine have, raccoons see to be a bit thicker, I watched one the other day get zapped, then come back twice more to touch the fence again just to check. Now he is more careful but still goes across the paddock daily. Not that you have to be concerned about coons I imagine.;)

My dogs lie on their bellies and commando crawl underneath, so, annoyingly does one of the wretched goats:mad:

My old cat learned the flying jump tactic - he run up and leap through the fence.
But he took a few shocks of various sections of fence before he learned to stay clear of all electrics ... Never hurt him other than his pride.
