ok, the only deep littering ive seen, was just a big wetsoaked pooey brown mess in the stable, a bit of shavings on and they went brown within the hour

however from reading, it seems its perfectly possible to semi or deep litter, and have the bed comfy, dry and warm, without it looking like a big flat poo

so, if using megazorb, i know u put it down to make the initial bed, remove the poo, but do you really take out no wet at all for the first week, and then only really sodden bits thereafter? how is best to muck out to make the bedding go further but without compromising the horse in any way

I use Excel Bed-down which is mixture of shavings and straw with a coating of eucalyptus. My bed is very deep, 8 bales to make a bed and I have put in 1 a week since the bed was laid in April. I skip out well Sunday to Friday and on Saturday lift the bed and remove the wet. When I lay the bed I dig out the banks and mix with the new bale and the centre of the bed. Including poo on a Saturday I take out less than a barrow. His bed is deep, clean and dry, in a few weeks I only add a bale every 2 weeks but at the moment I am still "building" the bed. Everyone at the yard laughs at the depth of his bed but it works really well and is cheap to run!

Yes, it's perfectly possible. Take out every last crumb of poo but leave the wet in to compact down. Put plently of new bed on top and over a period of weeks, you'll establish a nice thick base. Sometimes, really wet patches will come to the surface and you can take them out but you have to be careful not to disturb the base.

oh ok, so let me see if i have this right

6 days a week, remove poo, put some fresh on top of any wet but dont take any out

1 day a week, lift whole bed up, move dry to one side, take very wet out, leave dry in and mix with a new bale, bank it up and its repeat

yep, that's right! It does take a bit to establish. I used to do a semi deep kind of thing with my old horse. I basically left the wet in for about 5 days, scraping off any that was really deep, on the 6th day, I threw the clean up onto the banks, took out all the wet. Then I put the old clean stuff back down, and put a new bale on the banks so I could scrape it down as I needed it
