It is very sad and I hope I never find myself in this position. I would be naked and living in a box before my horse went anywhere.

However, I thought it stated that £3k was the cost of running a horse for the year not £3k for a cremation - or was that just me?!

Makes me want to rescue them all but I just can't afford to

Southernbelle, it was both. It said £3000 a year to 'run' a horse and then later in the article that cremation would also cost £3000. Seems to be a figure they like.
