Pandora the mare, a 5yo TB mare has to be covered up because of her allergy to grass. If even a single blade touches her skin, ti is enough to leave her gasping for air and covered in large, painful boils and is forced to take 15 antihistermine tablets a day.

poor pony! imagine being allergic to the one thing evolution has moulded you to love

funnily enough though, the condition only manifestered itself last year.

My horse is allergic to certain types of grass (when eaten) along with compound horse feed and many other things!, he is always turned out in a rug, as when he reacts to something it makes him itchy and without a rug on he will itch until he bleeds

. it also prevents insect bites which he is also allergic to. He didnt show any signs of allergies until he was 7.
 
There was a big article in one of the Horsey magazines about a Horse with a grass allergy not so long ago. Not sure if it was the same Horse but it was very interesting.

Ditto.

I have heard of horses that can't eat grass due to the fact that the protein makes them unpredictably hyperactive but are fine just having chaff.
 
Have posted this reply in NL as well, sure Fruity (Dora's owner) will be on here to clarify at some point but :

I'm at same yard too - and know Dora from previous yard. The daily mail has TOTALLY overexaggerated the problem. She is fine in the winter, in fact has been out 24/7 for last few weeks with no rug on! In the summer, she gets lumps under her belly and is reportedly a headshaker at certain times of day but she certainly doesn't have to live in 24/7 or anything - in fact she was out 24/7 last year! She has antihistimines (sp?) and a fly rug but has never to my knowledge been turned out looking anything like she does on that picture! It does affect her airways a little bit apparently but def not 'gasping for breath!'. I'm sure that owner will come on here and clarify further tho as she certainly wouldn't want people to think she was being cruel - to a casual observer and even to other owners there isn't anything visibly wrong with Dora even in the summer! Only when look closer does problem become more evident.

i truly do think it is the worst 'newspaper' in the world. at least the Sun, Mirror etc are honest about what they are. the DM is the worst of the tabloids masquerading as a highbrow paper. argh.

My RDA group had a pony that was allergic to summer grass. For years we thought it was sweet itch, but when everything was moved off grazing into the arenas due to losing two with grass sickness, despite loads of midges she cleared up. A day of grass and she was itchy again so was kept in an arena for the summers and never itched again.
