Ok, we all know how bad the Daily Mail can be but I've just read this report and can't believe how wrong they have got it?

"A source who had riding lessons from Mr Olding said: 'He knew Zara as an acquaintance and had met her several times at events where they raced together. British horse racing is a small world. It is a very sad loss"

Correct me if I'm wrong but since when have racing and eventing been the same thing?

I personally feel it is very disrespectful to Ian and his family to get such a major fact wrong be it a quote or not?

Oh dear, a complaint needs to be made. They need to get their facts right before printing

TBH i doubt its the main thing on people's mind at the moment.

And given how any horse sport is a minority sport its amazing it was mentioned at all.

I have added a comment although I very much doubt that it will be posted!
I can see a lot of the non horsey public shouting about eventing being cruel after this, there are already comments to that effect on the website.

the daily mails usual equine reporter was not there. This was some lackey in the office cobbling together something in ignorance and i will have something to say to them. they have a responsibility to get their facts right, particularly in these circumstances.

I know it's wrong but they were supposedly quoting the words of an acquaintance who was trained by Ian.

They make stuff up. I used to go out with a tabloid hack, I know this for a fact. They make up names, where 'they' are from, and quotes. Unfortunately once it is in quote marks, in print, people tend to believe it.

I really do not like their angle on this, that the only thing worth saying about him is that he knew Zara... and then it's an excuse for a picture of Zara. ffffffffs.

Well I left a comment on the page, I think it's an absolute disgrace to drag up Zara's name just because she is who she is

I completely agree - its terrible reporting of a tragic story. Just an excuse to use Zara's name.
Dreadful even by Daily Mail standards

Apart from anything else, I think that the wrong version of the story has been submitted to the website, there are a few things in there that shouldn't have made the final cut, including an accuracy note.

I've also made a comment on the website which is yet to appear!

They've really threw the article together at such an awful angle!

Even if they felt the need to name drop Zara at least write it within the article, the headline that Zara is in shock from death of friend etc is extremely distasteful!!!

Surely it should be eventing world in shock by death of talented rider etc!

Im not overly sure mine will get published as it was fairly to the point...

Mine too, it's not up yet....
I think it's a gross injustice to the man that the article focuses on Zara Phillips

Some of the posts they have quoted from just goes to prove people should be responsible in what they put on a public forum and not over react for the good of all horse sports. As we now know the press are monitoring these forums and will use anything slightly sensational to sell newspapers.

I totally agree. Despicable. They couldn't even be bothered to find a decent focused photo of him, and yet have a perfect one of Zara!

Considering that they are reading this website, I hope they take note of the comments posted here regarding their article.

MFH, i think they've got a deluge of complaints and comments from us all, and have probably binned the lot. If someone posts "Oooooh, Eventing is really cruel but Zara is really really brave" I bet it'll appear immediately...

I agree to some extent in some cases (though remember we do have free speech in this country) but can't see how it applies in this case? I saw nothing but sadness at Ian's death and support for his family. I fail to see how that is an over-reaction or sensational.

As for the article, tosh as always from the Daily Mail, wouldn't wipe my ar*e with it but the annoying thing is that some people will believe what's written there. Stupid that the death of a rider can lead to 'Oh, the cruelty of 3DE' comments - bet none of the people writing them have ever sat on a keen, strong horse that really wants to jump and tried to tell it no!

I read that article and left a comment. some of the comments were saying that the sport is cruel, that really annoyed me
mad.gif
because it was obvious that these people knew nothing about eventing.

I agree that the article shouldn't focus on Zara, i know she is HRH but it dosen't matter, if they were dating it would matter but the article says that they only met a few times!!!!!!!!!! Am really annoyed and can't believe it.

I am truly sorry to Ian's family and friends

My point was that the DM picked up on one post from somebody who wrote that eventing was becoming to dangerous and they were turning their back on it.They then used this to sensationalise the article. The last thing Ian would have wanted was for his loss to stop other people competing .

OK, that makes it a bit clearer but that was their opinion and how they feel, I still don't think that people should have to worry what a dishcloth like the Daily Mail thinks
smirk.gif
Not having a go at you, btw, more annoyed that the way a rag like the DM gets its information makes you worry about it.
