We’re having a bit of a health scare with my Doo, and I could use some advice from those who’ve been through similar.

For those that don’t know her, she’s an 8 year old fit ( healthy) Bichon.

Took her to the vet today with a suspended urine infection. Her bladder is very swollen, and mucky however no sign of kidney stones. She’s not presenting typically for cystitis as she has no problem peeing, but there’s a lot of blood.

She’s back in on Thursday following a short course of antibiotics and another scan.

Vet is concerned that there may be a mass that the can’t see at the moment due to the condition of her bladder.

If there’s a mass what do I do? What’s everyone’s experience - and don’t sugar coat it.

I’m in bits.

Oh I'm so sorry Amymay. I have no advice or experience I'm afraid, just wanted to say I hope it's nothing serious. It's evident to us all how much you love her.

When B rotter had a bladder tumour, she was given loxicom, which the vet said may reduce the tumour. That was in the may, just at the time that she was invited to be a bridesmaid in the September. We didn't think she would be around for the wedding, but she was. We eventually had her pts in December, as she began to decline again, she was eight years old.

I'm sorry AM, it sounds horribly familiar.

A colleague had a similar sized bitch to yours who was insured, so she opted for chemo, the vet said it would give her another 6-9 months, not a cure. The poor dog got so that she hated getting in the car, in case she had to go to the vet's for her chemo. I think it was once every 3 weeks but she became very reluctant to go anywhere in the car. She spent most of the day there and had the treatment as an infusion. I wouldn't put mine through it. As YorksG says, our Rott had an extra 6 months of good quality life without chemo.

If it's a mass, get it biopsied, a proper biopsy, not a fine needle, you want a proper bit to analyse. Go from there, pointless telling you not to panic, been there done that, nothing bar a clear biopsy will help you there. Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion or a referral to a specialist. Vets are GPS, my lot were quick to refer once they knew it was serious. Bear bled having burst a little hole in his bladder, I wonder if she has thumped herself being so active.

Get the tests done, I am crossing absolutely everything for Schmoo and you. Huge, huge hugs to you both.

No words of wisdom but really hoping it turns out to be something relatively minor. It hurts so much when they are ill especially when we don't know why.

I really know how you feel, I lost my lovely coco lab at just 6 and the days leading up to getting answers before we had to let her go we're almost too hard to cope with. I hope you have good news very quickly, stay strong.

I’m very sorry for you both. Our lab at aged about 12 was slowing. Down a lot and one morning just lay down and refused to move. Vet (who was actually her breeder) thought it was possibly a mass and on opening her he was correct, it was growing through the liver and she was pts on the operating table. It was obviously absolutely shit for us but he thought there was minimal pain leading up the event.
I very much hope yours is just an easily treatable infection.

Thanks for your replies so far. Have been talked down from slight hysteria by a friend.

If it is a mass and cancerous we won’t be putting her through chemo PAS xx

I do hope that it isn't but please be assured that the Metacam/Loxicom worked extremely well to keep the Rott comfortable for months. It was when that stopped being the case that we called time.

When my GSD had to be put down, a few days before, she wouldn't eat and threw up every hour. She ended up having a mass that had been punctured inside her stomach, leaving blood all inside her stomach. She also had cancer. :( We didn't know untill she had died and the vet cut her tummy open.
Don't wait to get Daisy tested for anything you're worried about, much better to know before she's in too much pain.
Fingers crossedxx

I am so sorry to hear this. It is so terrifying when you are faced with the realisation that there might be something very seriously wrong with them. Everything crossed here for better news soon.
