i show my 16 yr old pony once or twice a yr just a very small local level does any one know more about the traditional Dales plait and how to do it what colours the ribbon should be etc i only show for fun but i enjoy tarting him up. he isnt to bad an example of the breed and we have had one or two rosettes although i think his age and high fat content are maybe against him now

My friend used to show dales and from memory I think the colours relate to the breed lines (but not sure though!).
Have taken this from the Shibden Dale Riding Club Members blog and it states:
'Dales ponies are shown with red white and blue ribbons in their tails on breed society guide lines'.

Traditionally it is red, white and blue ribbon however we tend to use colours which go nicely with the ponies, i.e. recently we took a bay and a grey and the grey we used baby blue, sliver and yellow and the bay we put in traditional colours.

The plait itself is fairly easy to do. You start off with a small skinny french plait at the top of the tail and take the plait down about 2 or 3 inches taking in more hair from each side of the tail as you go. once you have a few inces worth of plait you then plait the rest into one long plait. You then loop the bottom of the plait back up onto itself and then secure the loop part with the different colour and length ribbons, hard to explain without seeing it, not sure if i have a pic somewhere, if i do i will try to find and post on here.

Found a few pics from recent Midlands dales show, however they are not very close up but you can sort of just see the little loop at the top that the ribbon is tied around and the traditional colours that the bay mare is wearing.

well i just do a little plait at the top then loop it up and into itself with the end inside (hidden) then tie the ribbons on i use red white and blue. i find diffrent wighths suit diffrent bottoms (lol) wider for more developed hindquarters and thinner when she has been out of work prob thinner for youngstock too.
