Opinions please? we have left our details with the dalmatian rescue as we have always loved the breed, Just wondering about other peoples views and experiences with them
The only dalmatian I know well is "Twenty", the firehouse dog who lives across the street (bought as a gift for Ladder 20, after many of their number were lost in the 9/11 attacks).
She is reliable with adults, kids etc., but can be very aloof if she doesn't know you. Very growly with certain female dogs. Extremely obedient, though--she has free roam of half the block, and is sane and sensible enough to go nowhere near the (busy) road or forage for scraps (like a certain Boston Terrier I know
).
She is quite famous--made Time magazine as a nipper, and was in the Fantastic Four movie
they are lovely but extremely dippy. I found when we had ours she constantly had to be exercised and the like to keep her stimulated otherwise she ate everything in sight. although she was great for agility classes. one thing tho i was told they can be prone to hip and arthritic problems but didnt have any trouble with mine.
Hi,
We used to have a Dalmatian, the main problem was that she would moult all year round. Short white hairs stuck to everything.
A neighbour has got one and he steals food off the worktops and can open the fridge door (to get more food)! The dog is also deaf so you will need to watch out for this as it is a problem with the breed. Having said that, he's a happy, friendly dog.
Ive got a x dalmation he is lovely really stupid.
A friend used to breed them and they were always well behaved she said they could be abit stupid at times, just the way they are. Nice dogs
We breed dalmations (a litter every 2 or 3 years rather than puppy farm style!) My parents have had the same line since the 70s.
They certainly are high energy dogs, and will either need a lot of walking or access to a decent open space to run around in. They can also be very dippy. Dalmation rescue should ensure that you get a hearing dog. Deafness is a problem in dalmations (like hips in some breeds for example), but the vast majority of dalmations are hearing tested at 4-6 weeks old.
Their temperament can depend on the line they come from. We breed ours with temperament very much at the top of our list and they are kind and gentle with children and other animals, and very well socialised. Agression with other dogs does seem to run in some lines.
Ours was a nightmare. He was always getting out and terrorising the neighbourhood. He would get on the bus and refuse to get off. Other people used to avoid our road becuase of him. And he was a big boy. Greedy, stubborn with a very high opinion of himself. He lived for 14 years and never gave an inch.
We've got two and they're fabulous dogs. The dog was a bit of a toad when he was younger but I think that was mostly parent's fault for not training consistently and properly. The bitch is lovely, very faithful and loving, but can be a touch neurotic when left alone.
Great fun dogs. Need loads of exercise and stimulation though so be prepared for long walks!
I have a Dally which we had from the Dally Rescue. I love her very very much. She's a bit like a super-model - beautiful to look at - but no brains!! We tried a few years ago to take her to training classes - she caused chaos - she was trying to be friendly, but was in all other dogs faces so they would try and bite her
Unfortunately, when we 1st had her she came with loads of mental baggage, and is still absolutely terrified if a male raises his voice. For a family pet, she is wonderful fun (although a little slower now as she's 12) and has never ever growled at anyone and loves to sit with my daughters and watch TV. She's very dippy and smiley, which some people think is snarling!
She steals everything in sight and to date i do not know how she has got away with no operation to empty her stomach!!
Other than that - go for it have one! She is high maintenance and you have to be patient with them, but they are so worth it.
Dally rescue have just rang there is a liver spotted 1 yr old dog that needs a new home so we are going up on thursday to spend a bit of time with him and see how we get on fingers crossed that he likes us and he will be coming home
I used to have one... was incredibly dippy and lovely to be around, but at the same time was an absolute nightmare!! Stubborn as hell, uncontrollable energy, would get aggresive to strangers and would wander at the smallest opportunity ...plus he moulted ALL the time.
I have a Doberman now who is very similar but an absolute gem, I think having the Dalmation taught me a few lessons about how to handle dogs that like to overpower you. I'd be happy to have another one as he was a FAB dog, just after the first experience would do some things differently.
