My boyfriends family have sadly come to the decision that their 4yo dalmation must be rehomed. He has attacked the other 2 jack russells 4 times in the past 3 years but to the point that they could have been killed. It is purely a dominance issue and a clash of breed. They have tried numerous training from professionals to try to sort out the dominance problems but to no avail.

Does anybody know any info about rehoming a dalmation? We know of a local dalmation rehoming charity but are unsure of the details such as if the potential homes are vetted and the dogs regularily checked on (ie. like the ILPH), how long generally it takes to rehome, what sort of permissions the owners would get (ie. could they ever visit the dog?) etc. Do you think this is the only way to go? They are obviously heartbroken to come to this decision but feel they have tried everything else and cannot sit around and wait for the worst to happen. He is a fabulous dog otherwise, brilliant with people etc. My boyfriend obviously wants the best for the dog but wants to know the in's and out's of going through a charity to rehome.

My boyfriend has come up with the last-ditch idea of using a muzzle (ie. one of those neoprene type soft ones which limit how wide he can open his mouth) because really there are certain times when the attacks happen (coming in from walks / when outside together etc.) so he thought it could go on during these high-risk times? But others feel its cruel?

I would get in touch with the Dalmatian rescue group. As long as his aggression is only directed toward other dogs, they should take him on. Aggression toward people, obviously, is much trickier.

Speak to Dalmatian Welfare they are excellent but please be aware that there are sadly more often Dogs than homes. Male dogs in particular are more difficult to rehome particularly those with temperament issues. Dalmatians can be the most fabulous dogs but also can be a nightmare, I know as we have had them for many years. Be as honest as you can about the dog when speaking to the Co ordinator as i will help her place the dog more easily, all prospective homes are carefully checked by them by experienced owners.
I used to home-check so I know how careful they are. Good Luck
