Tonight I've noticed that my pony seems to have ripped off part of his frog, it seems to be the back quarter (on one side) of the hard calloused area that touches the floor. The exposed area is quite soft, there is no blood and he is sound. He has recently taken to going up and putting his feet on the top if the breeze block wall between his stable and the one next door and the other day he pretty much 'cheese grater-ed' his feet along the edge of the breeze blocks when coming down so that's the only thing I can think he had done.

I've scrubbed his foot with hibiscrub and painted it with iodine (plus asked yo to put a divide up between stables).

I just wondered if anyone had any ideas of how the frog will fix itself, should the soft area become calloused and hard and we wait for it to grow? Any thoughts as yo any precautionary action I should take to keep the foot happy?

Thanks

Is it not exfoliating as what would happen at this time of year, they will grow back, and if there is bo blood and it isnt in the flesh heel part of the foot it will be okay.

Not sure, I don't think so. None of his others look like they're shedding or peeling and they're hard as nails. The thing that is concerning me is that the exposed part is quite soft and fleshy and the bit that's gone is obviously the bit that touched the floor. Now there's a gap on one side of his frog which isn't in contact with the floor with a softer bit exposed.

If it was exfoliating do you just leave it and it will grow back?

Yes it grows back quite quickly too, farriers cut the frog away all the time in preparation for a shoe when also removing sole, it will be fine. You could spray with tetcin to be sure but it will be fine

My pony has just shed all of his frogs. It looks quite dramatic when the hang off, but he is always fine and the always grow back.

Thanks guys, his frogs are usually like rock and he's never worn shoes in his life (not through any special treatment from me!) so feet are not usually something I worry about!
