My horse has got a pollen allergy hes wheezing and can be seen breathing from his flanks. Hes been on piriton and currently is on ventupulmin but its not making any difference (going to get inhalers from vet) and when he was cantering around the field tonight he was making a funny noise. My last horse had COPD and Im worried he may have damaged his lungs.

Ive had problems moving this horse, he wont go in a trailer without rearing.

Any ideas as to what this noise is please?

Was your horse making any noises when he was cantering around the field? Also isnt that similar to the babyhaler nebuliser? Ive got a babyhaler.

DIAMOND has asthma she makes gurgling noises when breathing when pollen high also gets lethargic she is just finishing her ventapulmin due to pollen bad . I use flixotide from the vet i used to put it in the bottle now i put it in the mask believe me this is worth every penny you can even put obis oil on cotton wool and put in tube which then horse inhales through the tubes. I found vet one waste of money the amount of times diamond jerked her head up and all the flixotide escaped this goes over head so no loss read the web site
sorry never seen a baby enhaler dont have kids this is purpose built for horses

hi, my horse also suffers from allergies although quite badly i have the inhalers from the vet (the one like a childs) and my horse hates it he pulls away just as you spray the pump therefor not getting any and as they have to have about 8 puffs 3 times a day i found it didnt work for him and in fact stressed him out more than it helped him! he has had ventipulmin but the vet said after the initial doseage it doesnt really work and they just use it for a few weeks after a reaction to help the horse with a boost - my horse is now on steroids as my vet said this is the last line of treatment for the allergies and if he doesnt show improvement on them after a week theres not much else they can do?????????

hi my cob has quite a nasty pollen allergy. He has the preventer (brown) inhaler and the blue (releiver) i use them for about 5 months of the year because if i dont he is very tired and depressed because his breathing is laboured. I have a mask that does up over the back of the ears and its very successful. Would highly recommend. Also i have learnt the hard way not to put him on long grass as the pollens get stuck at the bottom of the grass and irritate him whilst grazing. He was prescribed from vet 60 anthihistimine a day but i just give him 15 as i just didnt like the sound of the number lol. I hope this helps :D

My vet believes steriods via inhaler are the best way to go. The trouble with ventipulmin is that it opens up the airways allowing the horse to breathe in more pollen and irritants which can damage the lungs further (maybe why it doesn't work long term).

One of my ponies has a dry cough on first trot and we believe this stems from damage to his lungs when he got a respiratory infection as a 5 year old with a previous owner which was not managed sufficiently. I've had great success with Newmarket Respiratory Supplement.

Nose nets are also sometimes good for pollen sufferers, both in field and when ridden. Do you have any rapeseed locally as that can be a terrible offender.
