My horse is really lame (4/5) on one front leg. She went for xrays on Wednesday and one of the sesamoid bones is cresent moon shaped (ground or broken away) a slight beginning of a hairline fracture to the front of the cannon bone and 'wool stuff' as the vet describes it accounting for all the swelling (which looks like higher up windgalls) and pushes through side to side when squashed down.

She is on 2 danilon a day, still 4/5 lame and she is a 24YO ex comp horse. She is in high spirit, bright eyed and in good health in every other way.

It breaks my heart to see her hobble round but the vet has advised 1 month R&R.....will this help or am I 'flogging a dead horse' so to speak. I would NEVER want her to suffer unduely but the vet seemed unsure when I mentioned putting her down.....will she get better?

My mare has just come back from sesmoid damage she was very lame x-rayed etc and box rested for 8 weeks she went out last week for the first time and is very sound ! i am hoping to bring her back into work soon.

Keep positive x

I would certainly give her the month to see what improvements there are - and then review the situation, obviously taking in to consideration her age.

Thanks folks for the messages. The poor thing bless her. I will give her a month and review it with the vet.....I hope she comes back from it :-) xx

I also had a mare with sesamoid damage (hind leg) who had an athroscopy and some debris removed then steroid injections....she returned to full work and hunted twice a week :)

Another update
The leg and joint have started popping and creaking?? Vet thinks this is the damaged sesamoid moving and possibly rubbing on the ligaments (ouch)....the noise goes right through you!

On box rest and on 4 danilon a day for 4 days then back down to 2 a day - still heavily lame :-(

Im hoping the box rest helps....we have now had the chat about her 'quality of life'

Fingers crossed for my girly!!
