Phoned the farrier today to book an appointment to get beastie shod, and I mentioned that had on what I have been told are Draught Plates - which he had never heard of and he has specialies in heavey horse shoeing. So I described them to him.

Resulted in a sish and "what type of horse do you have??" So I told him Shire X. And so now I have to go measure his feet to make sure he will have shoes to fit. If not i.e. Beaus feet are too big he will need ot order me some specially at the wonderful price of .....dum dum dum.........................£140 a SET!

I almost choked! There is no way Beaus feet have gotten THAT big! But good nes is that he is more than happy to refit all the old unworn/hardly used shoes I have for Beau provided they are viable.

Just wanted to share my shock!

My farrier hand makes all his shoes anyway. I can't for the life of me imagine he'd charge that kind of money for a set of shoes. Madness! I've a few old shoes here from some of my horses but they rust terribly when removed.

What a bizarre situation to be in.

Hey,
I have seen one of your earlier posts and thought that your horse was a shire x, What is he crossed with ? I have a shire x TB and he looks similar to yours.
My lad has big feet aswell but I only pay £45.00, He just has normal shoes. Why does your horse have to have draught plates on ?

I have two heavies - one is a Clydesdale x with enormous feet. She has light weight draft plates on with anti slip nails. A new set costs £70.00 and my farrier refits them for £45.00. She has a new set every other time she is shod. Ordinary hunter type shoes are no good as her feet are so big that she needs extra weight bearing surface to the shoes. My farrier orders her shoes from his normal horseshoe supplier, so I don't know what your farrier is on about

Looks like my brain shut down when I heard the Hundred part, so £104 looks more likely than £140!

A 'normal' set is £64. I dont actaully want draught plates on again, and I have no idea why they were put on! He was doing a lot of XC and hunting, but cant see that being the reason. And the nails were showing areoung 1/2MM when I first got him back - dont know if that was for grip etc but since they have worn down he IS slipping on concrete etc (the barn floor is realyl slippy!)

They really encroach (sp) on his frog so not happy about them, but will get farriers opinion.

His feet are only around 14cm from side to side and prob 15/16am toe to frog. That doesnt seem large to me.

Jimbo1 - He is either Irish cob or Irish Draught. Well it says Cob on his passport. He came over from Ireland in 1999/2000 so is more than likely one that was just picked up at a dealers as a hunter (he has splint son all 4 legs and attacks solid fences with an overly keen attitude!)
