Treated my minis yesterday with Coopers fly repellent by pouring 100ml on from poll to dock. Have just checked them today and although there are a lot of dead lice there are also still quite a lot of live ones, even close to the area where I poured the coopers on. The ponies still seem quite itchy too. How long should it take for all the lice to die, is this normal or should I reapply it using a different method? Was thinking of putting it in a spray bottle and spraying all over?

How does the stuff actually work? Is the idea that you pour it across the back and it is then absorbed into the skin and spread all over the rest of the body, or is the idea that you put it on the back and the lice will die when they eventually come in to contact with that specific area?

So, just to add, I've just been to the vets and he said to give it a bit longer to work and then reapply. He said it takes a while for it to spread across the body when you apply it just on one part of the body. So we'll see what it's like in a few days

Would be interested to see how you get on. I treated my new boy on Monday with coopers as he came infested! as you, I can also see a lot of dead as well as alive. The box said to re apply in 14 days but I'm not sure if that means for flies or lice?!? Feel very sorry for the poor ******! He's scratching himself raw!

The vet said to me to reapply again afrer 14 days and then if there were still lice alive another 10 days after to that to get in touch with them

years ago I had a Highland foal who was badly infested with lice. I got a powder from the vet, you mixed it with water and it made into a paste like wash which you bathed them with and left to dry.
does worming with an ivermectin based wormer not work as well as it kills the lice when they feed.

Hmm.... the instructions on the box for the 600ml bottle are to measure out the correct amount per body weight and then to wipe all over with the sponge. We did our lad on Saturday and they were dead within 24 hours. I know you can buy Coopers "Spot On" which is a bit more like Frontline, I think, in that you just put it on in one place and it is a systemic treatment, but the bottle is definitely topical and will need an all-over application to work correctly.... with a repeat treatment in 14 days.

You do not pour the Coopers on! This is prob why you have missed so many as a shetties coat is very thick & most liquids run off easily.
You need to decant the right amount into a bowl & then use the sponge supplied (as per instructions on the box) to squeexe/rub the lotion in, right in - down to the roots of the hair.
Then re-apply several days later.

Yes I think I probably would have been better wiping it on like it says on the bottle. I've never used the stuff before and when I read the instructions on the box I thought they were a bit vague as it doesn't specify whether or not you just wipe it over lightly or whether you really need to rub it in. So I asked on here and everybody (I think) told me to just pour it on along the back. When I told the vet how I had applied it he didn't say I had done it wrong he just said it would take a while to work.

When I reapply I will definitely do the wiping on method! It just seems like such a small amount to cover their entire body...
