Hi guys
Well just as i thought I had got somewhere with my new mare (picked up week before Xmas) and how I gush and Ooooooh and Ahhhh over how we get on and how lovely she is turning out .... SHE ISNT!!!

It seems the dreaded 'lady' issue time of year is upon us and my mare is in season and has reverted back to this ......

So ... I am thinking of a supplement...

NAF Magic (I have a tub unopened)
GlobalHerbs - Frisky Mare
Or cut straight to the point and go for pure vitex agnus castus

Any thoughts or advise ... anyone use something else?

Regu-mate financially isnt an option at this time! :o

Thanks and be nice ... im delicate as its my B,day tomorrow (35) and my mare is a trog from hell :p

Just having a read now, thank you .... There is a reason i stay away from mares

Ive been getting so frustrated the last few days because she has been so horrible and touchy and yet we have come on leaps and bounds since i've had her and i couldnt understand why .... then its like a light bulb went on in my head (loud thump noise .. i am male after all) and so i started putting two and two together :o

Haha my girl will definitely let me know when it's her "girly time" but the difference has actually been amazing since she's been on the supplement. We took her off it for a couple of months and definitely noticed the change back to her old moody self
Good luck :D

My mare is on Agnus castus, I was seeing an improvement but she has been a mega grump the past few days. I think it is because I can only get her to eat about 20g per day when it is recommended 30-50, so I am uppping the dose now she is used to it. It has a pungent smell and taste! I noticed more of a difference when I stopped feeding her alfalfa, does your girl have any of that?

Naf oestress you only give 10g per day apparently, maybe they made the Agnus castus content more concentrated somehow, although not sure how as I am feeding it pure. There are quite a few other things in it though. I have never faffed so much with a horse's diet!

Nope, she has spiller cool mix .. which im fazing out as its stupid starch-o'clock!! Dengi hi fi light. micronised linseed and garlic powder in two feeds a day (garlic is added only 2-3 times a week though either am or pm but not both) Plus usual ad lib hay and turnout.

I tried all the herbal ones over about a year, found that Oestress seemed to work better than the others. Unfortunately, it still only slightly took the edge off & I had an angry, bucking, teeth-bearing, unloving, unrideable bag of vipers for at least one week in every 3! So she has been on Regumate for the last 2 years. Ridiculously expensive but the only thing that works for her! :)

Ive gone for the GH Frisky Mare option ... purely because im desperate and this was all they had in stock. A lady down the yard swears by it but we shall see :)

I feel your pain and was having this exact conversation today.
I have been recommended oestress, either the naf one or the equine america one. off to look now

Hope it works, I think all the supplements are based on the same things anyway!

If she has hi fi lite that has alfalfa in it and is what I changed from. As it is only partially alfalfa I don't know how much difference it makes but I know some mares, especially spooky ones, are best to try without and see what happens.

I tried mag ox first, great improvement, then Agnus castus, not sure about that one but definitely improvement to start with, then I took away alfalfa and changed to timothy hay chop, she's definitely less spooky but whether it is any, all or none of these factors who knows!

I used regumate on my mare and claim for it on the insurance which they will pay for upto £1000

to offer some comfort, we had a WB mare who was a complete cow in her first season of the year, totally unrideable, then the rest of the year we never knew when she was in season, no supplements, change in feed or anything and as good as gold
